At least he didn't change the school's name then run off to Wazzu; like the one after him.
He was my Prez the entire time on campus. Met him a couple of times. Really nice guy and he loved Memphis. He wasn't the best for athletics, but not the worst either.

As I remember it; he wasn't near the best for the state of our Football program.

Closer to the worst.
I have no real opinion either way on his administration, but in 1990 Mrs. Carpenter insisted that the marching band switch to wearing some silly hats she saw in the Caribbean. We were glad he left the next spring and could go back to the regular hats.

I don't know which is/was the biggest mistake---the name change or the stickers.

Couldn't have been that bad for athletics. We went to 3 sweet 16s and a final 4 while he was there. I assume they hired Dockery during his tenure (does the Dempsey hire cancel out the Dockery hire?)

In the 1980's, we were in the Metro Conference, along with schools like Florida State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, & Louisville...

I think history shows that we missed opportunities with football in the 80's and 90's that led to us being left out of the expansion games. Most of that should fall on the AD's of those years. But the prez might also have some fault.

But like I said earlier. He seemed to be a good man who did care about the city.
