Reading is fundamental, Jed. My two posts differentiate between conference inventory and intra-conference games.
I've been tracking since 2015 viewers for all games, non-bowl games (regular season and CCGs), conference-controlled inventory, and intra-conference games.
Total games vs non-bowl games came about because this work was started in a discussion that the G4 fans over-emphasize bowls because they get viewership that other G4 games rarely do.
Identifying conference controlled games is important because that's what the conference is selling when the conference is making media deals.
Intra-conference games, then, are noted because they show a conference's inherent drawing power. But that isn't the sole value a conference offers a media partner in media rights deals; having the juice to get home-and-homes with big draws means you can sell those big name games to the networks (e.g. Notre Dame at Navy are now part of the AAC primary deal - doesn't matter if more people are watching that game because the Irish are in it than because Navy is in it, Disney is still paying for those millions of viewers). Conference-controlled game viewers are money; intra-conference game viewers are for chest-thumping.
You're almost correct - AAC viewers for all games, including Army-Navy and away games, for 2020 was 33,697,000.

For the conferences which played conference only, these are the same numbers as the conference-controlled AND the intra-conference. The ACC and BigXII played ooc games, but all at home, so the same as conference-controlled, but there is a drop in the intra-conference numbers when those ooc games fall off. For other conferences, these total viewer numbers also include away out of conference games, which would have been accounted for in the home team's conference-controlled numbers (and for the AAC it includes Army-Navy not otherwise accounted for).

Thanks for the work and the continual progress. The trends seen to be pretty clear even in a pandemic year most of the numbers are similar in relationship to each other. It's going to be interesting to see how our computer rankings stack up again. I expect it will be similar to other years with Sunbelt replacing the the MW in that usual 7 spot. Next year lines up nice if the schedules hold, covid is controlled, and we win, lots of good games that should boost our viewership numbers and rankings.

Thank you for this very interesting data you have compiled and posted in this thread. It is much appreciated. Your data readily illustrates why Boise State would like to be in AAC. TV ratings were generally down this year which is attributed to lack of attractive nonconference games and the late season start. TV viewership of the Conference Championship games was down about 40% for all the conferences besides ACC (because of Notre Dame) which was up 129%.

Different number of games played by everyone, so comparisons within 2020 or between 2020 and 2019 are going to be flawed. SBC gained from being available when others weren't; Pac12, mwc, and MAC relative low for late start. B1G had a lot of great games and would have been even better without the late start. Playing conference only the SEC, B1G, P12, MAC are the same for all games, conference inventory, and intra-conference
In general - the usual P6/tweener profile. 50% of the viewers of the worst non-contract-bowl conference, and the best G4 has 50% of the AAC's viewers. Looking at intra-conference games, the difference between AAC and G4 is even greater.
Thank you for this very interesting data you have compiled and posted in this thread. It is much appreciated. Your data readily illustrates why Boise State would like to be in AAC. TV ratings were generally down this year which is attributed to lack of attractive nonconference games and the late season start. TV viewership of the Conference Championship games was down about 40% for all the conferences besides ACC (because of Notre Dame) which was up 129%.
Thanks. I hadn't quite gotten my arms around legitimately comparing year to year. Average per rated game is probably a right answer...and when I grabbed last year's spreadsheet I hadn't run averages...and all the "n.a." are interspersed in there so a little bit of a lift to clean that up...and then the bigger question of how SHOULD I treat the "n.a." games...

Dominant showing by the AAC but clearly I’m pleased for the Sun Belt out here looking like a real football conference.
AAC CCG drew 1.88 million on ABC----not bad going head to head with the SEC CCG and a Stanford-UCLA game. Thats the top non-power CCG rating this year. The MW was closest among the G4---drawing 1.42 million on FOX OTA.

Viewership wise a GREAT year for the SunBelt. Three conference controlled million-viewer games, and the first ever SunBelt vs SunBelt million viewer game. The BYU Coastal story got huge numbers for being on ESPNU. I would have liked to see what the SunBelt CCG would have done (in addition to watching the game myself).

That is a real good AAC number considering all the games in that time slot, and where the casual fan might be tuned in. I'd say that the 1.88 mil were hard core AAC fans.

The SEC CCG dropped by a percentage like the AAC, so it's nothing to panic over. more competition from NFL and from more non-ccg games, and more. Just another 2020 asterisk. But I wouldn't want to oversell it - still the worst ever, when the Cincinnati CFP talk (within a national media conversation of "these committee rankings are messed up") should have gotten more non-hardcore-AAC-fans.
