The Spiders were a National League team and I believe had one of the worst seasons in history (20-100 something) if not the worst. No thanks. Actually Paul Hoynes had an excellent story on cleveland.com which is worth reading. He explained how the older fans feel about it pretty well.
The last things the Indians need is to lose corporate sponsors. They really had to do it. Also I never knew the Hope Memorial Bridge was named after Bob Hope’s father because he actually did some of the work on the sculpture. Learn something everyday.

I don't think he was saying the liked it for the Indians. I think he was responding to me using it as an example of a name people didn't like at first, but now seems normal.

Geez, you mean I have to read every post?!
Burden, yes I remember it when it was named after Bob Hope's father. My bet is that most people still call it the "Lorain - Carnegie Bridge", though. An interesting side note on that - according to a Plain Dealer article at the time, when the renovated bridge was dedicated under its new name in the early 1980s, Bob Hope was invited to speak, but Hope wanted to be paid! I'm not sure if that report is true, but it sounds like Bob Hope.
Turns out there is already a team named the Cleveland guardians, You cannot make this up

I kind of like 'The Guardians' just because it has a connotation of being responsible for something. The current culture is so caught up in self-interest, it is a good change of pace.

I have to admit, it doesn't flow off the tongue so well. It ends up coming out as 'Gargantuans'. I'd suggest using 'The Guard' for informal reference.

I was voting for the 'Ghoulardians'

But of course, they'd better license the Marvel figures, and have Groot, Rocket, Gamora, etc from the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' in their advertising. I think if they can swing things right, they might be able to get someone like Albert Belle added to Marval's Guardians of the Galaxy

I find it very hard to believe that they didn’t already know this and have taken care of it. If I owned the rights to the name, I would sell it pretty quickly for a decent cash payout because that’s the only way you will ever make any money off of it.

I am feeling better about the name a week later, but still think they could have done better.
I wonder if Dolan can have the Cleveland Baseball Corporation sell the 'Cleveland Indians' name to himself. I'm sure there will be t-shirt sales for a long time from now. It might be more profitable than the baseball team itself
I believe they'll continue to hold the trademark for the old name and logos. So pretty much any Cleveland Indians merchandise going forward would just be them selling off what has already been made, I would assume.

Looks like they got enough money from the city, state and county to pay off the roller derby team. Maybe they can even find a right handed outfielder??
And the adventure continues…

Well they didn't have to change, they were somewhat forced to drop Chief Wahoo for the All Star Game, but voluntarily did the name swap. Yeah here are the Atlanta Braves wearing a tomahawk logo across the chest of their uniforms and doing the tomahawk chop in the World Series.

Agree, there is inconsistency in how both professional and collegiate teams handle dropping names and logos that are no longer appropriate in a diverse society. The name "Braves" isn't as bad as "Indians", IMO, and the Braves logo isn't as bad as the silly Chief Wahoo, although the more recent Chief Wahoo was much better than the older one. Myself, I couldn't care less about a team's name. The Washington Football Team is OK by me. I care about tradition in team colors more than the name, but it seems that colors are now being changed all the time, though not officially. How many different color and styles have the Cleveland Cavaliers used? I don't see why there would be a problem with two teams in a city with the same name. There once was a St. Louis Cardinals at the same time in football and baseball. And, you sometimes hear old-timers refer to the "New York football Giants", a relic of from when New York was the home of the now San Francisco Giants.
I agree on the colors creating an identity. I like the wine and gold for the Cavaliers. I think those colors went out of flavor in the late 80s so you got the blue and neon orange, but really, they shouldn’t have messed with it. I can’t imagine Kent with different colors.

My wife thought the Braves were the Indians (Guardians) when the World Series was on based on the colors. No, she doesn’t pay that much attention to sports.

That deal is far from a done deal. Many on council tired of being manipulated by Billionaire owners that do little for Joe Average.
Dolans are in deep sh** on many levels.
It’s a mess. A final vote is pending.

Epic fail on so many levels…
They claim that the Indians offered a nominal fee I'd love to know what was offered. I hope it comes out soon.
