Any update(s) on your DC Tyrone Nix? Tyrone is a former player and asst coach at USM so I feel like he would have little bigger chip on his shoulder to come here and do well this weekend but it appears that may not happen at this point? Thoughts and thanks in advance

We've done a terrific job in the last 3 games against UTEP, FAU, and LA Tech of making halftime adjustments defensively, as our defense has conceded an average of 209 yards (and 57 total points) in the first halves of those games, but an average of only 66 yards (and 14 total points) in the 2nd halves. It's been a similar story on the offensive side.

Then again, you guys do lead the series 4-2 and we have yet to win in Hattiesburg. I'm tempted to try and attend as I've yet to make it to Hattiesburg for a game.

This wouldn't be the year to do it. It will be empty and you won't get to enjoy the tailgating.

Yeah, aware of that, since it's like that everywhere, including our home games at the Alamodome. But as a teacher, I have next week off for Thanksgiving Break, so an opportunity like this doesn't present itself often, since there wouldn't be a huge rush to get back to Houston on Sunday so that I can finish up grading and preparing for the next day's lessons Sunday night as I normally would be forced to do.

The only thing making me think twice about it is COVID frankly. I have a strong immune system and am not worried about it myself, but I worry more for my wife because she has a weakened immune system. I already take many extra precautions as a classroom teacher to avoid bringing something home to her since there's always the chance that I may contract something and be asymptomatic.

I make all the UTSA home games in San Antonio (about 3 hours from where I live), but I'm much more familiar and comfortable with San Antonio since I lived there in the past and my parents reside there as well. Besides San Antonio, the only other place I've been since this whole thing started has been Austin because my brother lives there.

I am sure you would still have fun and it would be even better with a probable win for y'all.

As far as I know, he's still on administrative leave.
Leaving Houston at about 5am tomorrow morning to head to Hattiesburg. Will head back Sunday. I know it'll be an atypical game-day experience, but I'm still looking forward to seeing the campus and stadium. Let me know if you guys have any recommendations/must-sees. This will be game 116 for our program.

Speaking of which, I didn't realize until after I did some research into USM's history that you guys were called the USM Southerners up until 1972, and that you also upset Alabama 38-29 in Bear Bryant's last home game in Tuscaloosa in 1982. Pretty interesting.

Bear Bryant called former Southern Miss QB, Reggie Collier, the best player that he ever coached against. Collier was the first ever NCAA QB to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a season.

I think that ended a 57 game winning streak by Bama in Tuscaloosa.

That was a huge win for USM on Nov. 13, 1982 (and their second of the season vs the SEC!). The next weekend on Nov. 20, 1982 USM hosted huge underdog Louisiana Tech; final score: LA Tech 13 - USM 6. Although it was a rainy game in Hattiesburg, the drive home on Sunday was quite sunny and enjoyable.

One of my favorite researches into USM's history moments is that the 2012-2013 seasons (then followed by 2014) was the first time USM had back to back losing seasons since the 1933-34 seasons.

That's impressive.
Getting excited about this game. Having a chance at our 6th win in this crazy f*&@ing year is a blessing. Hope we don't s*@t the bed.
Good game USM. We did just enough to squeak out the win. Your team played well. I was impressed with your QB and Gore jr is a difference maker. Our passing game left a lot to be desired. Good luck the rest of the season.
Hopefully next week the UTEP Harris shows up, and not the S. Miss/FAU Harris. We’ll take the win.
The only good thing is no matter how bad our team gets we will never be as bad as CUSA refs.
Southern Miss played a helluva game. Had me worried. Lovely campus. Had a good conversation with a couple in front of us. Love the hotel I'm staying in too. Just an all-around nice time in Hattiesburg today.

Which hotel? Glad you had a good time. Good luck the rest of the year.

You’ve probably been asked before, but why is your U.T.S.A. in binary? Are you a computer science major?

Hotel Indigo, right across the street from the campus. Was 0.3 miles from the stadium. And best of luck to you guys the rest of the year as well. Thanks.

Actually was originally, back in the 80's when computers first really began taking off, but I ended up switching to Education because I couldn't picture myself behind a computer the rest of my life. Been teaching middle school math since.

Wow, yeah, I remember seeing one of your campus bookstores next door, so that doesn't surprise me. You guys have a lovely little town there and very nice campus. Much to be proud of.

I was wondering about one thing I saw, and thought I'd ask you guys. I remember seeing the remains of a tree trunk, laid out across the lawn in front of what I believed to be a chapel, and I was wondering what the significance of that was. It appeared to have cuts in several places (or maybe marked lines), but it didn't look to be a tree that had fallen and just hadn't been cleaned up yet. It looked to be there by design. Does it have something to do with your campus being in the Mississippi Pine Belt?
