"We have an opportunity to exemplify what I think is one of the greatest lessons in athletics, and that's to face adversity, get back up off the ground, and continue success."

- Jack Lengyel

This Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic loss of life to all those on board Southern Airways Flight 932 claiming the lives of all 75 on board.

We honor those lost this week.
Still very painful to think about.
I remember when this happened and what a huge tragedy it was. Very admirable the way Marshall handled it all and their resolve to recover and move forward while honoring all those that lost their lives. God bless those families affected and Herd nation.

I tip my hat to your school & community, as even to this day, I'm sure it still sits heavy on the hearts of all.

Will be chanting We are Marshall throughout the game this Saturday, & may have to watch the movie this week.

Another good one is ‘Ashes to Glory’. It’s a PBS documentary and well worth watching.

I own both "We Are Marshall" and "Ashes to Glory."

I know many Herd fans hold ill will towards the "Ashes to Glory" creators, as they sued Warner Brothers, however, I concur. "Ashes to Glory" fully lays out the community struggle and relief in full detail.

BTW, my wife and I are extras in "We are Marshall"
I posted in our game thread, but I think it would be a nice touch that whomever wins our game on Saturday, should place the game ball at the 50 yard line.

What scene Riley?

They cast 500 extras to film the "We are Marshall" scene. They gave us free food, and asked that we dress up in 70's garb.

My wife and I are honored, but we can't make out where we are!

They had us move around all day, it was fun.
Dennis Dodd has done an extraordinary piece on CBSSports:

They Are Marshall

And Riley, I will never watch Ashes To Glory again. Deborah Novak and Joe Witek proved they were nothing more than a greed hungry parasites when they tried to sue WB claiming copyright infringement. Sorry Novak and Witek no one owns the story, not you 2 for sure.
The Ashes to Glory was a very good documentary on the plane crash. The movie We Are Marshall was a dramatization and not very factual. I have talked to young people who have seen the movie and some of them think it is historically correct.

Correct you are. I have spoken with Red, Jack Hardin, and Ernie Salvatore quite a bit about the crash. The differences in fact and the movie are interesting. That said, the movie was very well done.

I found the link to rewatch the 50th anniversary memorial fountain ceremony.
The movie is factual other than some of the characters and how the final play was executed. Hollywood always embellishes events made into film.

I have no idea your connection to the events of Novembe3 14, 1970, but I was a student at MU at the time and had five fraternity brothers on the plane. I guess we will just disagree on the issue.
No.. they firefighters found a wallet, not a playbook. Chris is a hybrid character as is his dad. He was originally supposed to be the restaurant owner, but the steel industry took over. I originally thought the restaurant was Wiggins (which probably was the real restaurant) but they had a Jim’s. Which I’m okay with as well..My mom always said Wiggins was the hangout..
College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta

This is what the college football hall of fame looked like yesterday.

As far as "We Are Marshall" is concerned, it's timeline factual. Did Hollywood take some liberties in the story, yes. Like the scene with the board meeting and the "We Are" chant. The "We Are" chant didn't start at Marshall until the early to mid 80s and wasn't prominent until the 90s.

I didn't live the events of Nov 14th 1970, I wouldn't be born for another 13 months so I can't comment on those who lived through it. I had an aunt who was a Soph. at Marshall at the time and she tells me that from Nov till about April of 72 everything is a blur.

Cypress -- Fly Again

This is how the 50th Memorial Fountain Ceremony ended. I think it was spot on.
