I've seen it all now
IMO, UNT dodged a bullet with this one.

Is bullet slang for a loss?
Geez. As our old coach Bobby Pruett used to say - if you’re scared, get a dog.

Yes.

If they play in December, it can get very cold in El Paso. It's a different cold than the rest of C-USA cities (dry cold in a 4000ft elevation).
I guess not surprising given that Texas is currently in the midst of being the top state for new cases and deaths. Probably won't be the last Texas-based game to be cancelled over the next couple weeks. But odd for UNT to be the one to postpone it.
Here's the story: UNT blackballed the city of El Paso due to a SUPPOSED recent spike in COVID cases. It has nothing to do with UTEP, UTEP's players, the hotel they would be staying in or the airline. UNT just thought they could strongarm UTEP into moving this game to Denton, and UTEP said no.

Are all you that stupid?

Why would NT dodge a game with one of the few teams they are favored over?

It is a health issue, it looks like some of you would begin to understand that players welfare is more important than a single game.

What health issue? UNT wanted another home game.

Apparently, at least one of you are.
UNT officials indicated that they offered to pay for UTEP to come to Denton to play the game, and that UTEP declined the offer.

Well there's a new precedent for 2020. "Hey, U of _____ just give up your home game this season against us and we'll pay your travel expenses and play at our stadium instead. We've got your best interests in mind of course and we'll see you at our place again in 2021. So glad we could be there to help you out in your time of need!".
I've said this for months, the conference office is going to have to grow up, and reschedule these games.

The programs initiating the postponements are not going to be in any rush to reschedule these games.

The use of the term grow up is probably a little bit more politically correct than what I want to say.
El Paso is reporting a spike, so I can understand why North Texas took a shot at getting the extra home game. But, I'd rather we played the game now, than hope for it to be played later. But, that is easy for me to say. I'm not a player and don't have to take the field.

I will say, if the spike in El Paso gets worse as we move into flu season, the Miners' season might get frozen, and they might wish they took us up on that offer to pay for their trip to Denton. Time will tell. I guess we get a few extra days to prepare for LA Tech.
UTEP's coach Dimel said after UNT canceled that UTEP had no intention of playing the game @ UNT and giving up a home game. He also said if UNT doesn't come in Dec to make up the game, it should become a forfeit. He also said that CUSA should set criteria for cancelations and not allow each school to decide on their own if they want to play or not. I think he's right.

An example of criteria is what the Big 12 did. If you don't have 53 players available and x number at each position then you can cancel. Otherwise follow the established protocol and go play the game.
it actually makes the argument to cancel much weaker with the offer to have UTEP come to north Texas state

lets look at reality and common sense the exposure between players and staff is a wash no matter where you play you are still dealing with the same players and staff on the field and in the game no matter what city you are in

so then you get to "travel exposure" which again is really total nonsense

1. the flight crew (especially if SWA) is most likely not based in El Paso they are most likely based in dallas out of Love Field and thus they are no more or less a threat to expose a team to covid than a flight crew going to any other place that is not a "hot spot"

2. if north Texas state has "dat balla cash" to pay UTEP to come to Denton then surely they have a lot less cash to get 2 pilots, and 3 or 4 flight attendants tested before they team gets on the plane.....much less the fact that SWA or any other airline are probably testing as frequently as anyone

3. what exactly makes it less of a risk for UTEP players to walk through the El Paso airport, get on a plane and fly to Denton vs. north Texas state taking the opposite path...well nothing at all.....with a very few exceptions it will be all the same people working in those two airports no matter which team is traveling in whatever direction.....and really possibly even the same flight crew or a flight crew that has been in very close contact with flight crew members that would be in the plane (or in either of the airports)

4. the hotels......there i no daily maid service at pretty much any hotel right now and a day or two without that is not a big deal at all for all but the biggest hotel guest idiot.....so maid service is not a concern

you are looking at 3 or 4 front desk staff MAX over a couple of days and again "big spenda" can surely afford to pay for a test for a few of them before showing up to the hotel.....at max 2 maintenance staff that can easily be tested and if all meals are eaten at the team hotel you might be looking at 5 or 6 restaurant staff max.....mix in a manager or two and a supervisor or two and you are looking at about 16 people to test that would be running the hotel......testing them is much cheaper than paying for UTEP to come to north Texas state (and probably free or covered by the hotel or by UTEP or CUSA)

5. on the field staff to run the game.....besides the refs and the people holding the down markers there is pretty much non one else that north Texas state would need to expose their team to in order to move from the team bus to the locker room to the field of play.....and most likely UTEP is testing all of their staff that deals with any of that as part of their overall testing program to protect their own players

6. at most two bus drivers to be tested.....next to no cost involved

when you look at the fact that at most north Texas state would have their players and staff exposed to perhaps 20 people that are El Paso residents that could be part of a "hot spot" and all of them are easy to identify and test or easy to isolate the players from very safely and many of them are probably already being tested regularly there should be no concern what so ever

then when you look at the fact that if you are concerned about some luggage handler, ticket agent, or rando passing through the airport that you cannot somehow manage to isolate from and that might touch luggage or a ticket or a chair prior to a north Texas state player touching it and getting the virus (or breathing in their infected breath).......well shouldn't you be more concerned about 100+ UTEP players and staff passing through that same airport and being exposed to those same people conditions and one or more of them picking something up and then bringing it to Love Field and then Denton?

common sense would say that is much more of a concern than the other way around

and lets not pretend that the El Paso airport is some major hub that cannot afford to or is unable to isolate a gate for a brief period while a team passes through especially during the low levels of travel going on now

and if they cannot do that for a north Texas state team passing in and out of El Paso then they cannot do that for a UTEP team passing out of and then back into El Paso (with only our of really mattering)

so common sense would say it is easier to isolate 120 or so people coming into a "hot spot" and keeping the risk low (especially when those 120 or so people will isolate after returning to Denton by matter of protocol) than it would be to isolate 120 or so people leaving a hot spot (where the greatest risk is a very easily managed pass through the El Paso airport on the way out) and having those people come to Denton where they would be interacting with hotel staff, Apple Tree Stajium Staff and bus drivers (and Love Field staff) right at the time when they would have been most likely to have just been exposed....and thus least likely to show symptoms and as likely if not more likely to spread it into Denton

Yeah, that won't happen. C-USA isn't going to create some new standard in the middle of the season. Plus, some teams will probably end up with more rescheduled conference games by the end of the season than they will have time to play. Southern Miss already has two conference games to make up. I hope we get to play UTEP, but if it doesn't happen, I doubt C-USA can make us forfeit the game. ODU canceled their entire season and C-USA didn't do squat.
Very frustrating. It's a UTEP win.
