Tribe basketball hosted an hour-long pre-season "Zoom" hoops session last evening for season ticket holders that was full of information from Dane and his coaching staff.

Since nobody has yet posted I thought I'd pass along some of the highlights for all on this board.

All in all, it was very positive and upbeat: some highlights:

*They expect to utilize a nine-deep lineup as the overall team level
of skill is high. At times they might even use eleven. Starters may
vary according to the opponent, who is hot, etc.

*The only players they got into specifically were the three freshmen, all
of whom received kudos for their talent, athleticism and high basketball
intelligence. Dane noted all three would see significant minutes this season. He mentioned Yuri Covington as a player with high
athleticism, a never-stop motor, ability to get to the hoop as well
as shoot three-pointers.

*He also specifically mentioned freshman walk-on Kurt Samuels as
a player who will play. Samuels is 6-5, 229 and would appear to be in the mix.

*Captain Luke Loewe under the new eligibility rules could come back
for a sixth season next year. At this point no decision.

*With the two big centers gone we'll see a different offense with our
athletic guards and forwards taking it to the basket and taking advantage of their three-point abilities...we'll be fast-breaking more.

*Defensively, we'll see more zone defense at times and players going
for the offensive boards much more

*Dane discussed the new CAA schedule format too with its Saturday-
Sunday games. Schedule for out-of-conference still in progress, but
games set include home and away with Hampton, away with GW, ODU and UVA, home with High Point & Fairfield, and a few more to be added.
Asked about Richmond & VCU he said we couldn't do it this year but
feels confident we'll have home & away with at least one in future
seasons. Objective is away schedule with trips that can roundtrip in
one day due to virus.

*Not certain at this date if any fans or students will be allowed at home
games...to be decided next month. Not optimistic.

*Work starting on Kaplan renovation. They are behind a little due to
virus, but it is on.

*Very pleased with three recruits fore next year (great news!), especially
so since virus eliminated coaches traveling to scout and players visiting
here re NCAA rules. Couldn't discuss the players as they have not signed
grants-in-aid yet, but they are all high-level recruits.

*No word yet on TV.

Dane and his staff were great, we could all enter q&a, and the session
was positive to say the least.

My own opinion...we have a terrific coach and person, as well as the
same for his good-humored staff.
Thank you, Bubba!
Thanks for sharing Bubba

Did Loewe not get here in Fall 2017? Wouldn't it be his fifth year next year? Or am I off somehow?
Thanks Bubba!

Discovered I omitted one note: Coach Fisher specifically mentioned redshirt freshman Thatcher Stone as part of his freshman group
who will play. Part of our 9 and/or 11 player substitution mix.

I do remember from last season that the coaches were very high on Stone as a prospect and felt he'd contribute in the future.

Interesting. I thought that we discussed during the season that the coaches played Thatcher past the point of claiming a redshirt year.

Does that, maybe, take into account the NCAA's recent give back season to the winter athletes from last year?
Pretty sure coach said last night that no one in this current class loses a year of eligibility this season. He said all kids on current roster have 6 years to play 5. So to me that meant all incoming freshmen have 5 full years of eligibility including Ben Wite since he redshirted last year.
This is awesome to hear, thanks Bubba.
Thanks, Bubba!

TribeAthletics.com shows Thatcher Stone as a sophomore. I believe that the moment Stone stepped on the floor last year, his redshirt was burned. I think that in basketball, the only way that you can play in a game(s) and not burn a year of eligibility is if you get injured pretty early in the season, never come back during the season, and are successful in getting a medical redshirt for that year.

If you scroll up you see the post that all the current players due to Covid cancelations now have 6 years to play 5. Stone burned his freshman year but still has 4 years of eligibility left.

Understood. Stone still can be on scholarship for 5 more years and play 4 of them. But if he were indeed a redshirt freshman like Bubba says, it would be my understanding that he could be on scholarship for 5 more years and be eligible to play all 5 years, just like Ben Wight.
Covid sucks, but If you are interested in earning a graduate degree, this is a fantastic time to be on scholarship

I used to chuckle a little at friends and family members who got online MBAs, but i guess they all are online now.
