That's now I believe 10 HOF who have passed away in the last year. And it's not just HOF but inner circle guys.

Good grief.

He just recently made a congratulatory video for Freddie Freeman. Seemed like he was in good health.

I hate to hear that.
saw this number which is remarkable-
Pirates looking to do more offloading before the season starts?

looks like Indians, Pirates, and Orioles in a race to the bottom of the salary race.

Y'all have anyone that could protect Freddie Freeman? Who could ideally play OF?

What do you want for them? 02-13-banana

yeah you guys have a huge Marcell Ozuna sized hole in your lineup.

yes-
lol-
There will always be sportswriters, wanting to preserve their access to a team's front office, who will try to spin a salary dump as some kind of genius move to acquire prospects, or in the case of other pro sports, draft choices.
poor Pirates fans-
Mothaphuk a salary cap, baseball needs a salary floor and some European pro/ rel system. Why do the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers essentially allow the Pirates to steal their revenue and do nothing with it. MLB wants to reduce the number of minor league teams... Well here's your solution: 60 teams split into 3 levels. And boom no more affiliates... You gotta buy out contracts yada and so on.

NBA has a salary floor of 90% of the salary cap. That would make sense for MLB.

Why do the high-revenue teams let the Pirates and others have revenue sharing money? Having a significant number of teams that dump salaries and refuse to compete in the free agent market benefits the high-revenue clubs, because it lowers their cost to acquire desirable players. The high-revenue teams benefit whether they get desirable players by swooping in when a cheap owner does a salary dump, or whether they pay less for free agents because only a few teams are competing for each top free agent.
Pirates team salary heading into the season is $37.8m.
Nats sign Brad Hand.

The NL East is going to be a beast this year.

yeah you guys have a huge Marcell Ozuna sized hole in your lineup.

The frustrating part is they could re-sign him. They just don't want to commit long term. They've been taking risks on guys that have bounce back seasons...Donaldson and now Ozuna. The problem is the assumption that you won't get a comparable year from a guy you took a chance on.

I was honestly hoping they would have pursued George Springer a little harder.

yeah. They've rolled lucky 7's the last 2 years. Eventually doing that you're going to roll snake eyes.

More recent reports have had them looking at Realmuto, but with the Player's Association rejecting the DH today, I'm just not sure.

Of course, I'm not certain the DH doesn't end up back on the docket, but it's become a little ridiculous at this point.

95% chance we have a DH this year.

They're not rejecting the DH, they're just rejecting this specific Manfred proposal.

The MLBPA's #1 issue, by far, is this: The owners don't want to start the season on time while there are restrictions on ticket sales; the owners really want to play about half a season and pay players about half their salaries.

So, it's a good guess that the MLBPA wants any agreement on the DH or playoffs to be tied to an agreement to play a full season, and that they don't want stand-alone agreements that would leave room for Manfred to impose another short season with short pay.
Confirmation that the MLB owners want to delay the season because they don't want to pay the players until they can sell tickets without restrictions:

Quote:A representative for Major League Baseball encouraged members of the Cactus League to write a letter to commissioner Rob Manfred voicing a desire to delay the start of spring training, according to people with direct knowledge of a Jan. 13 meeting conducted via Zoom.

The letter, which surfaced Monday morning and was signed by Cactus League executive director Bridget Binsbacher along with six mayors, two city managers and a president of a Native American tribal community in Arizona, says that members of the task force “believe it is wise to delay the start of spring training to allow for the COVID-19 situation to improve here.” The letter cites the fact that Maricopa County has one of the nation’s highest infection rates, and also references data from the University of Washington that projects a decline in infections in mid-March. As of now, Cactus League games are scheduled to begin Feb. 27.

“Basically, the position that the league stated on the call was that they were open to delaying and that the players were not,” one source said. “And that a document like the letter may help push negotiations along and allow what you guys would like, which is a 30-day delay.”

“The representative was very direct,” another source added. “They believe it is time to push off spring training for a month, but they’re having problems with the players because a change would be necessary to the CBA for that to happen. He supported a letter to put pressure on players to push back spring training, a full month.”

“I felt it was made explicitly clear that the owners are supportive of this,” this source added. “And that they would like a delay of the season.”
