With the uptick in highly rated basketball recruits joining (or at least publicly considering HBCUs), does this hire help football recruiting or conference/institution perception?
I think it’ll play out like Avery Johnson to Alabama. Cool and high profile at first but will quickly fade.

I've never considered Deion to be head coach material. I'm sure he'll bring in more talent than the teams he's competing with, the question is what can he do with it. If he's successful.... future FSU head coach.

I've never considered Deion to be head coach material. I'm sure he'll bring in more talent than the teams he's competing with, the question is what can he do with it. If he's successful.... future FSU head coach.
If he’s successful, I could see the struggling Seminole fan base being interested
I'm going to go against the grain so far and say this has a terrific chance of being a successful move for both Sanders and Jackson State. Deion has a good football mind, is very personable and will be able to recruit on name alone. A couple years of success at Jackson State would open opportunities for him elsewhere, and the Tigers program will be on better footing.

I think you're right. Deion has wanted the FSU job the last couple of times it has been open, but he hasn't had college coaching experience. If he is successful at Jackson State, it will open doors for him. And, if he is successful, it will be good for Jackson State.

That's my belief as well. He's taken the JSU job to get noticed and parlay that into some kind of position at FSU and sooner rather than later. I doubt he thinks he can actually jump straight from JSU head coach to FSU head coach, but he could easily get a DC type position that could then lead to the head job.
Sucks for me though. As a Southern fan I know that just on name-recognition alone he will significantly boost recruiting at JSU, a big rival of ours.
Do high school kids even know who Deion is? He hasn't played football since they were in diapers.
He's not in commercials. He's not even in the broadcast booth or on ESPN. He's just an analyst at halftime for the NFL Network - and he never really stood out to me as great enough at that job that he would still be there if he hadn't been Neon Deion 30 years ago.

Their parents and coaches do, and that's nearly as good as the kid knowing when it comes to recruiting.

Your right. He actually has 7 years high school coaching experience - 8 if he finishes 2020.
Jackson State has a huge stadium for FCS and a good fan base. A lot of potential there. The stadium does need a large of updating.
Probably would not hurt for them to play more FBS games as well for more money and more exposure.
Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium is amazing. I’m surprised it didn’t get a bowl game. Mississippi St and particularly Ole Miss played handfuls of games there. Colts/Saints played a preseason game around the time they went to the Super Bowl IIRC.

J-State was trying to get away from so many FBS games. They haven't played many due to the fact that they draw pretty well, have great ticket sales and have an active alumni base that gives to the program. They didn't have any FBS contest scheduled for 2020 and they don't have any scheduled so far for 2021.
Wrong sport, I know, but I remember being in the stands and watching Deion hitting an inside-the-park homerun against the Colorado Rockies at Mile High Stadium their inaugural season when he was playing for the Braves... God, what speed he had...

Could either do that or spend a season or two at a Sun Belt/C-USA school. If he wins enough then anything could happen.

Wasn't it basically blackballed due to the NCAA's confederate flag thing that kept official events from happening in Mississippi?

I would bet that Deion Sanders name-recognition among high schoolers is very high. He's just a very well known famous ex-football player. It's like asking if high schoolers know who Allen Iverson is. The answer would be a clear "yes" IMO.
