PAC-12 is also taking baby steps toward fall football.

Regardless of where you stand on this whole thing, and I've tended to lean toward being safe than sorry, it's gonna feel reeeaaally lonely when the dust settles and the MAC is the only FBS conference locked up at home.

It certainly shines a spotlight on how we're the financial skid row of the division.
This whole ordeal is a pathetic look for our league. The leaders of the MAC look like clowns right now. They don't even have a plan or attempt any conversation for a plan to safely comeback ASAP?? They basically just come out with a 'screw you all' statement and that's that.
Ofc they are meanwhile we look absolutely pathetic. Wave the white flag not the jolly rodger
The day of reckoning is coming. Mountain West and Pac12 are now looking at playing this fall. The MAC need to begin the process of Fall football planning now or risk no longer being an entity. No one will be playing in the spring. Even some high schools are playing right now.

There was literally a high school football game in Toledo's Glass Bowl with fans this past Friday...but the Rockets can't play.

How can the MAC not afford to play at least an 8-game conference schedule? Take yellow busses to every game for crying out loud. I'm sure donors would help with the travel costs. No need for hotel costs, just leave at the crack of dawn on game day if need be. The MAC needs to make this happen this fall!!

test day before the game do temp checks daily with daily questions about symptoms, mnay mac institutions have a medical school or one near by have athletes get a cardiac screening prior to season to ensure they are healthy and no cardiomyopathy. this is not rocket science.
We agree that financials are, in large part, holding the MAC back. Although it's curious how the Coastal Carolinas and Georgia Southerns of the world are making ends meet, unless they aren't doing much testing and rolling the dice. But I suppose a lot of the CUSA and SB teams got to keep a scheduled money game.

I know I'm letting envy and FOMO and players' social media pleas sway my thoughts on this whole thing. And no matter how much they'll parrot the "faster testing" line, that's why the B1G reversed course. But if the MAC had played this season, it should've started right after Labor Day with the other G5s and be done before Thanksgiving. The Halloween-to-Christmas schedule, getting into the thick of regular flu season, feels a bit ominous to me.

I suppose the MAC could look like the smartest guy in the room when it's all said and done if things really take a dump. The human side of us crosses our fingers and hopes that the season is a success, with minimal covid impacts. Knowing with that comes considerable damage to the MAC (image, recruiting, 20 months of rust, etc.).

well for some we are going on the third week of college football and so far no major outbreaks, a few teams pushed a game back a week but all in all things are looking good
Seems like the MAC should have still been paid for the money games since the P5 cancelled them. At minimum whatever the cancellation fee was. I heard FCS is having a spring season, maybe the MAC can join, LOL.

Don't like what Lisa Freeman started and now the MAC and my own will not play this fall. In fact just reiterated the plan.

My feeling is crap, crap, crap!

I do think the MAC should play if all the other conferences are playing except us. I thought the SEC, ACC, Big 12, and other G5 conferences would follow suit and actually care about the student-athletes and their well-being. But as we saw, their greed for money, power, and status was more important. So now the Big 10 and PAC-12 don't want to be left behind while the other P5 conferences reap all the power and money with less products to compete against for attention.

While it would be great to be the only FBS conference playing football and have all the ESPN Saturday games to ourselves in the Spring, we would also be at a disadvantage come Fall 2021 season when all our injured players are still recovering and all our non-conference opponents have had ample time for their players to recover. Also, i doubt the NFL draft would move back their timeline only for the MAC. So all our seniors who have graduated and are interested in playing in the NFL would likely opt out of any Spring season.

Most G5 schools get a large portion of their money from student fees. If those schools have larger enrollment numbers then they have more money available for their athletic program and testing.

Looking at Georgia Southern they have over 26,000 students (according to Wikipedia). Coastal Carolina appears to be much smaller, just over 10,000. I'm sure the G5's that are currently playing are essentially going in debt for all this unplanned testing. Many G5s lost out on non-conference pay games that are budgeted to help pay for the entire athletic program. So take away that money and now add a new, large expense for testing.

I don't think you're going to get blow-back from students and alumni when you are Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Notre Dame, etc. about playing football. But i'm pretty sure students and alumni at MAC schools will start complaining when the students aren't allowed to be in classes or on campus but their money is allowed to be used to play football and other sports.

The State of Illinois isn't even allowing high school football. When NIU, UofI, and other universities get money from the state and taxpayers it will be interesting to see how much say they have about them playing football but not allowing students in classes.

I know in Arkansas States case the state government provided us with 2 free antigen test machines. One of which must be used for students but the other was specifically provided to facilitate fall sports returning

To this point it’s prevented a major outbreak. We’ve had clusters of cases and played short handed and pushed our FCS game back 3 weeks, but nothing alarming

Quote:Maryland athletic director Damon Evans said he didn’t have a specific amount yet, but estimated that testing will cost each university $700,000 to $1 million. A spokesperson later clarified that the conference will be paying for test, but due to how Big Ten revenue is distributed to each institution, a cost at the conference level would likely result in schools receiving a smaller distribution, the Washington Post’s Emily Giambalvo reported.

there is no reason to test every single day
