I fully recognize we have an entire season to play before this becomes relevant, but I feel it just might be come December (if we actually do play). Who do you think would be a good candidate for our next head coach? Let me propose an option, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Larry Fedora

Yes, yes, I know he's been here before and left us, but grass isn't always greener (as he found). He may have zero interest in returning, but the man brought an exciting brand of football to Hattiesburg and recruited 'out of our league'. He had more talent sign with P5 offers in his worst year than Hopson has in all his years combined. Even when his defense was dreadful, at least people came to games to see if we could outscore the opponent. And it's not like he isn't available.

I know there'll probably be more discussion on this in the coming months, I was just curious everyone's thoughts.

considering what we were paying him when he left ($750k or so) compared to what we are now paying Hopson ($500k or so) there's no chance Fedora will take that big a pay cut to come back. Not sure of Fedora's current salary at Baylor but considering the previous HC Matt Rhule made just over $4 million and unsure what the new HC Dave Aranda makes I'd guess Fedora is probably making over $1 million.

When Fedora came to Southern Miss, we were still a respected program - coaches saw us as one of the best places to go in order to move up to bigger and better paychecks. That is now laughable. Coaching is only one of a list of problems - although a big one. We're now in the Sunbelt, the conference we use to look to for extra winnable home games and we haven't even won this ****** conference title. I never wanted Hop as the head coach to begin with, so I wouldn't lose sleep if he left. But, honestly, I don't think we'd get anyone much better interested in the job for the pay.

thats exactly correct. We are screwed so to speak on one hand Hopson is horrible on the other who do we get that is better for the crappy money we pay and the crappy conference we play in.
I would be happy with Fedora and/or Monken may come available again eventually. I don't see the AD getting rid Hopson this year under the current situation going on and we are poor.

We hired a string of OK State OCs there for a while. Bower, Fedora and then Monken.

Hire a hungry OC from a high octane offense. Let him coach us to 7-6 in his first season while putting up 40 points a game. Get to the CUSA Championship game by year 2-3 while giving up 20+ points a game. He leaves to greener pastures. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

A lot better than hiring the crypt keeper or a loyal to USM sheepdog.

i agree 100% however the days of getting those type coaches has past i think. We pay our HC $500k i would bet that most good P5 OC make $750k-$1M

I wish we were in the Sun Belt. Travel to road games would be easier, the opponents would mean more to us, and we’d very likely be able to recruit better, assuming our coach at any given time were competent in that endeavor.
Hop was taken to re-education camp after RB's Briles debacle and he's all into the SJW mode now. Winning isn't even a top 5 priority. Next coach, if there is one, will probably be some twit like Gilbert or one of the history professors doing it part-time. Ain't no up from here, dudes.
After watching the 2nd half of last season, I’m willing to take our chances with that history professor.

It’s not just us being grumpy homers, either. Our page in this year’s Athlon’s has a featured quote from another CUSA coach saying “For the amount of talent they have, you would think they’d be more effective against the top-half teams in the league.“

I suppose one way to make that no longer an issue is for the talent to GTFO.
