At this point, he’d be doing those students a favor.
What will happen to the “student athletes” if they are merely students? Scholarships gone?
Money decision more than medical. The distinguishing characteristic between P5 and G5 is that P5 programs make money on sports, whereas the G5 loses money. And the covid-19 BS would cost MAC schools more to operate, with less revenue, making seasons even more costly. Couple that with the fact that the schools will get a pass from their fans (at least the left leaning fans), as the decision meets "political correctness" standards.

D1 athletes are young and healthy, with very little legitimate concern for relevant covid-19 consequences. Probably a good percentage of them have already had it, and may not have even known, and the rest simply are very low risk. Thats the "data" and the "science". Liberals cite those things though only when they think it fits their current narrative.
College players starting to organize is what changed from last week when schedules were being announced, not anything to do with the virus. Canceling gives schools time to try to find a way to fight off the end of "amateurism"

Pull the plug. A number of Universities are going to have a hard enough making ends meet. Go back to an academic focus. Stop letting the tail wag the dog.
On classes definitely will reduce the need for staff
and facilities.

I'm sure that plays a big role, but they also probably realized there was no way to get through a season anyway.

That's what seems to be lost in the political and health debate. Looking at it practically, how in the world is anyone supposed to get through a season? Even if the players aren't dying (and putting aside the heart issues some players are already having), teams aren't just gonna be able to keep playing if there's an outbreak. Whether you think they should or not, everyone has committed to following public health advice. Look what's going on in MLB. Not going to be good optics if they tried to play and the inevitable happened and the season gets canceled anyway.

NCAA will need to grant a waiver to go less than 16 sports for D1. P5 and G5 schools can’t afford non revenue sports.
