Took both NMSU and ILLINOIS to the Final 4. The two squared off in the Lou Henson Classic at the United Center 2 years ago.

Isn't nuts that Lou Henson took New Mexico St to the Final Four 50 years ago (one year after Texas Western)...and was still involved with the Aggies nearly 50 years later?
Damn - that sucks. Great coach! Glad I got to see his teams play in person.

Great coach and class man. The rivalry between NMSU and UTEP when Henson and Haskins were both coaching, drew great crowds and terrific games. Both are in the Hall of Fame. He will be missed.
Excellent coach.
My 6th grade teacher said I had Illini fever and that's why I didn't show up to class on monday, after they lost to Michigan in the Final 4.
We lost a great coach, and a great person.

After his stint at Illinois, Henson came out of retirement at the request of NMSU to coach the Aggies after NMSU fired Neil McCarthy just before the start of the 1997season. I believe he coached that year for $1 per month, at his request. He was later hired as the permanent coach and stayed as HC at NMSU for several more years until his health started to decline.

He will be missed by many.
