AD's letter cancelling fall sports:
It looks like most CAA schools are cancelling. Only JMU and Elon appear to want to play still, though a few other schools like Stony Brook didn't put out a hard statement one way or the other.

Edit: Actually, Stony Brook does not appear to be playing.
If pro sports get cancelled it is going to be a looooonnnnnnngggggg winter...
Cancelling sports makes complete sense. My guess is that we cancel everything for the entire academic year unless a vaccine is out with promising results. Too much liability
I think schools like JMU and Elon that are FCS and trying to build a schedule are just chasing fool’s gold. There will be few teams to schedule with, some mixed bag of competition level, and surely no playoffs.

I would use it against them in recruiting as well.

Right now they are using it against us. Huge subset of recruits and parents that will look at our decision as a sign we don't take football seriously enough. Pretty dumb take but it's out there already.

Pretty unlikely they are going to end up being able to play anyway.
A very difficult day for W&M sports fans and alums like myself who lettered two years here, worked in the athletic department
three years while in school and before going into military service, and have been intimately involved in our program for a long time.

This will be the first year there will be no football, and no Homecoming for that matter, here since the war year of 1943.

Our coaching staff, as well as the other teams staffs, will keep our young men and women involved and safe as possible during this
truly tragic time in our nation as the pandemic burns out of control.

But it was the correct decision and one that had to be made.

Easy to rebut.

Our mission here is to educate the whole person. Football is part of that equation. The other parts are academics and social discourse. All three are important to be a part of the Tribe Family. And if FB is important take a look at the success of our Alumni. Go Tribe

If anyone thinks W&M doesn't cherish football because we don't play when our conference cancels the season, I don't want them at our school. Go to JMU or Elon.

I don’t disagree with your or other points. Simply saying the foot in the door is sometimes necessary to sell our program and if one school is playing and we aren’t they have the foot in the door.

Anyway, I doubt anyone plays. And honestly, I think it is a joke that our conference is so week that two schools can do whatever they want.
The CAA has a do nothing commissioner so I'm not surprised he's stepping back and not interfering.

If JMU & Elon play, they should be excluded from spring football.

Like spring football is a real thing. Santa Claus also lives at the North Pole.
Except, if they play football this spring it'll be very real. There's no such thing as santa so you're right about that.

If we play, you don't have to watch it. You won't watch Tribe Football this fall so do yourself a favor and adjust.

What would be your rationale for punishing them?

Punishing? If they elect to play a season counter to what nearly every conferencemate is doing, they are doing so to gain a competitive edge in recruiting and on the field. They effectively burned their season in the fall so, IMO, don't deserve a 2nd season.

If my kids eat dessert before dinner, they don't get to eat dessert again after dinner with the rest of us.

Aside from that, I have to imagine safety is a big concern. I can't imagine playing in the fall then immediately again in the spring can be good for someone. (Admittedly, playing in the spring and then again next fall may not be great either, but there's at least a longer rest period)

It would absolutely be a punishment if the CAA were to prevent them from participating in regular conference play, if it should happen in the Spring, because they choose to play non conference football in the fall. And it doesn't matter one iota if they are making a choice that is different than other CAA schools. Each of those schools has the exact same freedom of choice and they've made their decision.

Each state and each institution is tackling this virus in different ways. There is not a best way, and no consensus on how it should be done. Therefore, freedom is the best option and let each do as they wish.
