It is official. Washington will be changing the name of the “Redskins”. It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with for a new name. Red Raiders? Red Wolves? The Red Riot?!?
They could still be called the Washington Redskins. Just change to logo to redskin peanuts. Then again, the bleeding heart peanut sympathizers may complain that peanuts are being exploited.
Redtails. Sounds similar and has an unbeatable history.
Why stop with sports teams? Several states are named for Native Americans, including our own Illinois. I am offended by this and will demand that the names of all states named after Native Americans be changed. Also, since we are talking about states, many names originate in foreign languages, such as California and Colorado. I'm sure those are offensive to those from Spanish-speaking countries. Some originate in other languages, such as French. Change those names, too.

I previously mentioned redskin peanuts. Since that is a derogatory term that had been used for Native Americans, I will write to Planters peanuts and demand that they get rid of the term and just call them peanuts with skins. But, then again, people with thin skin may get offended by that.

When does this thing stop? Do we need to just identify things by a letter or number? But then, the linguists and CPAs may get offended. The bottom line is that there is always something that "offends" someone. So, again, where does this stop?
It's funny how the Florida State Seminoles get away with this. Yes, they have a special relationship with the Seminole tribe, but money is what helps buy the relationship. Isn't it ironic that FSU uses all kinds of Native American symbolism and imagery, including their mascot, that other teams would be criticized for (such as Illinois). Also, the Atlanta Braves are being criticized for the "chop" the fans do at the games, while FSU fans do the same (plus their sick war chant). No criticism for FSU! Maybe what the sports teams should do is buy the permission from the Native American tribes. Then, an already rich Native American nation would become even more astoundingly rich. That's where it always ends up, doesn't it?

Just explain to me why the Atlanta Braves are being criticized for something that FSU does and is accepted? Explain to me why it's not okay to name sports teams for Native Americans, but it's okay to name states as such, complete with all the imagery and symbolism?

Yes, the Redskins should (and did) change their name. Yes, the Cleveland Indians should have dropped the Chief Wahoo image. But the Atlanta Braves? The Chicago Blackhawks? C'mon now!

I was told by my crazy uncle in 2013 that if they allow gay marriage "When does it stop?!? Are people going to be able to marry their dog? How about a shoe?!?" They still won't grant me a Fido our marriage license at the county courthouse. I never thought my crazy uncle could have been overreacting!

Unless you are a member of the Seminole Tribe, I do not believe your feelings have any merit.

I remember reading a story or two about someone marrying their pet. I did try to marry my goldfish once, but that attempt soon got flushed down the toilet. 03-weeping

Apparently, neither does the Atlanta Braves'. Must be nice to have FSU's money. I wonder how much it would cost to name my local little league team after the Seminoles?
Where is all the liberal shrieking over the other sports team names? How about the Pirates and Buccaneers? Did they not kill, rob, rape, and pillage? And these teams are memorializing and glorifying them? Where is the outcry? Shall we talk about the Oakland Raiders? My gosh, all these teams have the skull and crossbones as part of their logos!

What about one of my favorite teams - the L.A. Angels? Isn't an angel a religious figure? And that halo?? There are atheists and agnostics in this country who would be offended by such a name.

I think the Colorado Rockies may be safe.

You are correct and I apologize to all peanut lovers (myself included). Plus, I would not want to incur the wrath of Mr. Peanut himself, Jimmy Carter!

The Seminoles are very much a part of the University. It's not just a matter of money.
The tribe also takes great pride in never surrendering to the US Govt.
You also have the CMU Chippewas of course. Miami went from Redskins to Redhawks. Maybe CMU will change to the Chippendales.

You know, IMO the Red Hawks would be a good name for Washington. They would still have "red" as part of their name, and the Red Hawk (or Red-tailed Hawk) is a proud bird (albeit a bird of prey). Of course, though, they would need to issue formal apologies to all Native Americans named Red Hawk.
Comrades?
Despots?
Amazing that some people equate being named after a specific tribe or man with that of a ******* racial slur.
