XII.... .552
PAC... .549

Not as much difference as I would have imagined before compiling this data. And, roughly half the schools of each conference (including Notre Dame with the ACC) rank in the top 2 quartiles (#1 - #32).

One statistic that jumped out at me was that no Big Ten schools are in the 3rd quartile, but fully half (7 schools) rank in the bottom quartile. No other P5 conference had more than 25% of its members ranked that low.

The PAC's "decline" may not be much of a decline at all. There is only one PAC team in the 1st quartile - Southern Cal at #12 - over a 40 year span.
I'm surprised that Northwestern and Illinois were that bad.

You must be young if you don't remember really pathetic Northwestern in the 80's. Or I'm old. I'm not sure what counts as old these days.

Shows you how well KSU has done. Because in the 80s, they were just like Northwestern.
I am not sure if it is still true today, but a few years ago, the top 7 teams (OSU, Mich, PSU, Neb, Wisc, MSU, Iowa) in the Big Ten all had average football attendance over 70,000 and bottom 7 teams all had average attendance below 50,000. OP edited to add # of NCs won in the past 40 years, NCs in the past 20 years, and last year to win or share a championship). The past 20 year wins are also included in the past 40 years. If there was a split championship (possible before the CFP) each team was given 0.5 wins for that year). Note that no P5 school won or shared the 1984 title, won by BYU.

Regarding the BIG with 7 schools in the lowest quartile...that occurs because their latest additions (Rutgers and Maryland) built their reputations in other conferences and only recently switched to the BIG.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s it was difficult to judge whether Penn State had good teams...or their competition was just really weak. That formula still works in the BIG.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. For both schools, their win% before joining the B1G was substantially better than it has been since. But however they got there, the fact is that the current makeup of the league is very top heavy.

right on cue.. lol
For most of it's existence the Western/Big 9/ Big 10 has always had 4 schools that simply were not competitive in football. That has always been ignored.

Minnesota was competitive until 1962
Purdue was competitive between 1942 and 1972
Md was competitive between 50-56 and 73-86
NW was competitive between 59 and 63
Rutgers has never been competitive

Competitive means being ranked in the top 15 or better, etc.

Buried deep within these statistics are the externalities created by segregation. Duke for instance was competitive from the 1930's until 1962 when the forced the ACC to de-emphasize football. Duke did not even desegregate until 1963.

This topic would make a good dissertation and book for someone with a year or so to spend on the fine research.

Actually the attendance disparity between the top of the B10 and the bottom is almost 97,000 to 38,000 or 2.5 to one. The top being OSU, PSU, scUM, Nebraksa, and Wisky and then Illinois, Rutgers, NW, Indiana, Minn, and MD.

The top schools in the B10 start the season with about 3.5 conference wins and at least 2.5 OOC wins. This allows the top 6-7 to work their way to a high ranking playing only 4-5 competitive games.

Put another way, the Globtrotters need the Generals to stage a game. The Big 10 is starkly this way. The SEC and the ACC are somewhat more competitive until recent times. In the SEC 4-5 programs rotate around the top and one sits at the bottom with about 7-8 in the middle. In the ACC 1-3 programs rotate around the top, but the remaining 11 rotate around the middle.

The following conferences would be be fully competitive in football:

Medium Boys

Minnesota, NW, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, and BC
Pitt, MD, UVa, NCSU, UNC, Duke, WF, GT,

Average attendance in this conference - about 40K - ranging up to about 58-60K

Big Boys

Miami, FSU, Clemson, VT, PSU, Ohio State
Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska

Big 10 people like to talk about the deadweight in the Big 12.

Bottom 15
Big 10 7
SEC 2
ACC 2
Pac 12 2
Big 12 2
I find that folks on here that have teams in the BIG are among the most level-headed posters. Not sure where your statement of "people" comes from? Just thought your comment was interesting.

right on cue.. lol
What does that even mean?

whenever something about a rust belt school gets mentioned you come in on your cape..

So bullet makes a statement that I find interesting and respectfully question him on what he meant and you have to come protect him? Talk about a couple insecure dudes!

I think you need to go through my history before making any more asinine comments about me.

Everyone needs to be careful about grouping posters by conference affiliation. There are immense differences among the various conferences posters. Some Big 10 posters may say that the Big 12 has deadweight, not all. Among the Big 12 posters there is some disagreement over issues as well.

Terms like little 8, Rust Belt, etc are hackneyed expressions of disdain. So is the ubiquitous threepeat of SEC. But hey at least these three conferences get attacked. I can't think of what the PAC is called other than a mess.

So why don't we back it down a peg all the way around. And as far as little 8 goes I think that is circulated most commonly by an SEC poster that was once a part of the Big 12.

The viewer data is very revealing and I would refer everyone who wants to get into a pissing match to review that before dissing a lot of these schools which may not win much but do draw eyeballs.

I say that because if there is a culling of the herd it will be those with the least market penetration that fall by the wayside. Wins and losses are nice but there are the same number of winners as losers every week. But eyeballs pay the bills.

Considering the 90s were a lost decade for OU, the 2010s were a lost decade for Nebraska, and Alabama had a few scattered dark years before the arrival of Saban, that's pretty incredible.
