For decades I have been told it is a racial slur for Indians. There have been protests about it as long as I can remember. Every time it seems to get down to brass tax on it though, it seems there aren't enough Indians against it or enough fans that want it changed so it ends up going nowhere.

I think the one instance I could be on board with was the Cleveland Indians and that caricature of an Indian logo they had. That did kind of come off as low ball.

Watched video today about what if they go after the Blackhawks.
Indians "reviewing" their name as well

Also, in regards to above post, as someone who can't stand Cancel Culture, I agree the Indians old logo & Redskins nickname is crossing a line. I don't see a problem with Chiefs, Blackhawks, or Indians tho.
Whether or not people want the change, it’s coming. What’s your favorite option?

For the Redskins, I’ve seen Warriors, Redtails, and Redhawks the most suggested. Of those, I like the Redtails.

For the Indians, I’ve seen a dozen or so consistently mentioned but I like the Spiders the most.

I agree with this. The best explanation I've seen regarding the Indians changing is that the name is associated with the caricature, and forever will be, even though they changed it. So it's probably best for them to get rid of it.

Cleveland Spiders would be one of the best names in sports. One of the rare instances you lose an iconic name and somehow upgrade.

The Cleveland Lakers or

The Cleveland Great Lakers.

Or how about The Cleveland Wild Things:

And for the NFL Team in Landover, Maryland, I think the RedTails would be a good option:

The team will announce on Monday that the nickname is changing. They won't announce the new name Monday because the one they want is tied up in a trademark dispute.

(It was reported last week that someone other than the team is trying to trademark Washington Redtails, so that might be the name that Snyder wants.)

Spiders sounds minor league but was the name of a very prominent major league team in the late 1800s / early 1900s era

The Cleveland Spiders are most famous for having the worst season of all time in 1899. 20 losses and 134 wins. Their owners had bought the St. Louis Browns and sent all of the Spiders' best players to the Browns in the offseason.

They were so bad, they only sold 6,088 tickets all year. And 1/3 of the way through the season, opposing teams refused to come to Cleveland so they played 85 of their final 93 games on the road.

While this is true, it's still a better name than "Indians".

I like Warriors for Washington.

And for the Atlanta Braves, I like the Atlanta Infernos.

The Kansas City Chiefs can keep their name but rebrand with a firefighter theme.
Washington Water-gators
Washington Senators 03-wink

Blackhawks are named after a person.
