I saw that coming....the right time for him to leave

Swofford will leave an uneven legacy - almost inevitable for someone who has been commissioner of a major conference since the middle of the Clinton administration.

But overall, given what he had to work with, you have to hand it to him: He guided the ACC through 23 very turbulent years in college athletics and where they stand right now is on pretty solid ground, firmly established as one of the five Power conferences. And the ACC isn't the SEC or B1G, so loaded with assets that it's almost impossible to screw the leadership up.

So .... a job well done.

That leaves Tennis Larry as the only BCS conference commissioner from the 2010 realignment left.

The ACC is in for revolutionary change in the coming years. Swofford is about ready to leave. Boeheim, Roy, Krzyzewski and Hamilton can't be far behind in basketball. ACC Football needs to get Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami and Louisville righted (at least each program has new head coaches that appear that is the case moving forward). It just can't be Clemson and everyone else. There needs to be some other program(s) that step up and compete for CFP slots.

Swarbrick can be commish if ND is a full member. Otherwise it is a conflict of interest.

No, mostly because of some off past issues in his previous job that did not settle well with me and many other ND people. I think he is a average AD. Not great, not horrible.

Yes, Swofford's great insight, and why the ACC is a P5 conference today, was realizing almost 20 years ago now that long run, there was only room for one power-level football conference on the Atlantic seaboard, and it would either be the ACC or Big East. And he took the necessary steps to ensure it was the ACC by launching raids on the Big East. When the first one in 2003 failed to deliver the knockout blow, he bided his time and struck again in 2011, this time successfully.

Big East stupidly did not realize this, so pursued a policy of "peaceful coexistence" with the ACC, and that's why its football wing is now the AAC - ironically, just as good as the ACC was on the football field last year, but getting paid about 1/15 as much for it.

Interesting. I have many family members that are ND grads and they love him (they did not care for White before him).

I think he gets badmouthed for things that are really out of his control. I mean, he’s not suiting up NC State or Carolina to play football.

ACC expansion was Gene Corrigan's idea, not Swofford's.

Agreed, Quo. However, I will add that the ACC had also acquired one of the original Big East's biggest source of conflict for many years - and that is the creation/establishment of separate factions within the league. For the time being, the payouts, CFP/bowl access and continued strength in men's basketball will keep the ship on navigation and conceal any cracks within the hull. However, in time (and in event of further realignment down the road), it is possible we will see these two camps compete against one another again (whether that is football-first/basketball-first schools, Private/Public, North/South, Tobacco Road/Everyone, etc.).

It was widely rumored that Clemson/FSU were ready to bolt if Louisville was not added in 2012. Just like the Big East (2005-2012) before it, if the ACC ever experiences a raid or a defection, there isn't exactly universal agreement with who an incoming member would be. You have schools that could provide value in football, but maybe not in other sports (UCF/USF); you have schools that have strong athletics, but maybe are weak in academics (Memphis); then you have schools that push the center of the league further away from South (Cincinnati, Temple, UConn).

And that doesn't even begin to describe the on-going ND membership, which will eventually lead to friction. (ND isn't joining the ACC, but the ACC likely thinks otherwise, long-term).

Will be interesting to see in the years and decades ahead, for sure.
