That was definitely the stated criteria, so I would suspect a canceled NCAA championship would mean no JMU spring season.
What the hell would the reason be for not playing a spring season? Is it cost? It certainly cant be covid - they haven't canceled other seasons. I would be furious if jmu out of the blue canceled.
Montana releases a statement

https://gogriz.com/news/2021/1/15/montan...eason.aspx

anyone else's BS sensors tingling?

"We know that student-athletes want to play and coaches certainly want to coach, but a reduced number of games in the spring will give our team a greater chance of success in the fall of 2021," said Haslam. "This decision allows our student-athletes to compete in some way but gives them more time to prepare in a more controlled environment."

Costello said the modified schedule allows student-athletes to maintain a normal cycle of preparation for the upcoming fall season. Montana State's most recent game was in December, 2019.

"The health and safety of our student-athletes is paramount," he said. "The timeline for our football student-athletes to be physically prepared for the current conference schedule can't be guaranteed given our climate and related circumstances. By altering our spring season, we will be able to focus on their physical training during the appropriate conditions and proper recovery for the fall season."

I mean its definitely cold in Montana, but its not freezing? Youre telling me they wont play because its too cold outside? What?

Once enough teams cancel, there wont be a playoff and that's the only reason JMU is playing in the spring. Doesnt look great for this year

The way things are going, FCS may not play a championship for two years.

Start calling up FBS teams now and work on an alternate schedule. If they don’t have spring playoffs, I’m not convinced of a normal fall FCS season either.

Call it “meaningless exhibition” all you want, I would have loved to see us play UNC last year.
It does seem inconsistent with the mission and purpose of D2 football to pursue some type of winter/spring season during the pandemic.

I think it has more to do with playing upwards of 20+ games in a short time frame. You cant claim player safety and expect kids to play that many games. There are tons of injuries players play through during the regular season that require surgery and recovery after a normal fall season which often runs into spring practice. When are players supposed to recover? Especially with teams that have high playoff expectations as both montana schools do.
Some of these teams bailing out of spring are doing it to maintain their fall schedules. FCS schools who play in the spring won't be able to start their fall seasons until the weekend of October 1... so I don't think the dominos are done falling yet.
Geez what a freaking mess

This may not be a popular opinion, but to me, the 2020-2021 college football season ended last week, and it was a really fun season to follow. Following and loving JMU football for 30+ years, it will be tough for me to get much interest in a spring season, and at this point, I would be fine in waiting until September to start back with a normal season.

The spring season will be full of postponements with not many if any fans in the stands. Who knows what kind of playoffs if any will happen. It will be going on during March madness, which I really enjoy.

Really enjoyed watching college football this past fall and credit to the NCAA and teams for completing the season. Many thought that had no chance of happening. Really good stories with Liberty and Coastal. Our true rivals :).

Hope we have some fun days ahead with JMU basketball over the next couple months.

Yep, pretty much agree. It's glorified spring rec league football. Just not that big a deal, to me. Just follow the lead of the rest of FCS and I'm fine with that.

Agreed.

At this point, just go about the Spring camp and game like any other post/off-season. Seeing some cobbled together schedule with one postponement after another, no thanks. No one in the stands= scrimmage games.

Glad some of 1-A kept it together so there was Saturday entertainment if needed, but now let’s just look forward to September.

playing this spring will not help our Brand - if we have aspirations to be perceived other than just in "D2".
i say opt out -regardless of CAA wishes, play the spring game, and announce our intentions to go FBS when it is feasible. we can still play a full schedule in the CAA in the fall.
no better time to make a statement.,

So on one hand you are not going to enjoy the Spring season because there will be little to no fans in the stands and you are expecting games to be postponed, but on the other you really enjoyed the FBS Fall season when... there were little to no fans in the stands and it seems like there was a postponement every week?

I agree it's going to be different and not as much fun, however, I'm not sure how it will be different from the Fall season we just witnessed. There were 139 games that were postponed in the Fall, and only 26 Bowl games were played (there were 40 played in 2019). The only difference that I can see is the lack of flexibility with rescheduling postponed games because of the playoff schedule.

Where did you get this info?

I thought it was reported when Towson defected. I can't find the link at the moment to support my claim so I guess it's hearsay... but seems like a total NCAA move to give teams more time off from spring ball.

Just a guess, but I feel like there are existing contracts involving D1AA programs who have games already set to travel to D1A programs in early September. I can't imagine the NCAA or any entity mandating anything that would jeopardize those contracts. Could be wrong though. I mean, I've been wrong before. Have to go back to 1977. 04-cheers
Agree with others that I won't be nearly as excited about a Spring season unless it involves a trip to Frisco in May.

If there are playoffs and a trophy up for grabs, we should be playing this spring. Not doing so would put us at a disadvantage to other programs imo.

If no playoffs, then treat the spring more as scrimmage games with an opportunity to tune up and prepare, evaluate our QBs and other key positions. I still think there is benefit to playing a couple games.
Hoping for home playoff games at BFS on...

April 24, Sat - Round of 16
April 30, Fri or May 1, Sat - Quarterfinals
May 7, Fri or May 8, Sat - Semifinals

Further hoping my much better half and I have been vaccinated by then and the weather is gorgeous and our hind parts are inside BFS to root on the Dukes during another playoff run. Lots of "hoping" going on here.

truthfully, the big "hope" right now is just that there will be a season that they can pull off

Could you imagine - if you have a crystal ball a year ago, and this post was the only info you had? Hard to believe it's really only been less than a year since many of us knew anything about this.

This last year really blows me away in so many different areas. Things I never thought I would see.

Hopefully by fall the pigs will stop flying. 03-drunk
