Full Version: 2020 ECU football expectations?

Is this the year ECU finally gets over the hump, if we even have a full season that is?

Looks like Vegas doesn't expect much with an over under win total of 3.5. That could be due in part to a tougher OOC schedule this year but most ECU fans will be disappointed with less than 6 wins I would imagine. Unfortunately, disappointment has been a familiar theme as of late. That said, the Vegas win total prediction was made prior to a very active off-season for ECU & in his rebuilds Mike Houston coached teams tend to make a big leap from 1st to 2nd year. Add in the quality transfers from Oklahoma, UNC, NCSU, Alabama, App St, & Arkansas and I'm starting to dream about an SMU-like turnaround.

"The Pirates not only added multiple junior college recruits for the 2020 class in defensive linemen Elijah Robinson and Henry Garrison, and defensive backs Robert Kennedy and Shawn Dourseau, but the Pirates also picked up six transfers from FBS programs in the process.

The Pirates have several key players returning from last year’s team, especially offensively. Junior quarterback Holton Ahlers, wide receivers C.J. Johnson, Blake Proehl and Tyler Snead...are among the key offensive players...."

As a Pirate fan I'm feeling more optimistic than I have in a long time. Just wanted to see what the board sees for ECU this year since I know I see things through my purple shades.
I expect ECU to show up on the field next season. If they're lucky they might get a couple first downs too.
We are a 4 win team until we prove otherwise.

I think that's a fair assessment and kudos for not putting on the homer glasses. I like your coach and I believe he'll have the Pirates trending up in due time.

5-7. Hard to tell how the new conference layout will affect them.
Problem is with UCONN gone and Marshall replacing ODU, South Carolina replacing NCSU & Georgia State replacing William & Mary (even Norfolk St is better than Gardner Webb) then ECU could improve and still only win 4 games again next year. ECU is predicted to finish dead last by everyone now that UCONN is gone. It's time to put up or shut up!

Notwithstanding all of that I think that all will come together enough for ECU to get to 6 regular season wins. Just don't ask me to pick which ones. The opening game vs Marshall is big. Win that and then @ South Carolina will become even bigger.

East Carolina has, hands-down, the worst football / basketball combo in the conference. And it ain't close.

It's been tough lately that's for sure but things have a way of turning around over time. I still think we're a year away from being a good team. It must of sucked for you guys when your football team sucked all those years. Congrats on being consistently good these days. I don't remember many Pirate fans rubbing it in Memphis fans face when you guys were always at the bottom of C-USA. To your point at least Memphis was dominant in basketball back then.

0-0 I hate to be that guy but I don’t see football happening this year.

I would go as far as to say a 3-win team. We had 2 FCS teams and UConn on the schedule last year to get to 4.

Differences between last year and this year:
Swap Gardner Webb with Norfolk State - ouch-ish
Swap NC State with South Carolina - ouch
Swap ODU with Marshall - ouch
Swap W&M with Georgia State - ouch

Without improvement, we're somewhere in the 2-3 range.

5 wins would be huge IMHO but I'm not expecting it.

On the flip side to your statement is that we have nowhere to go but up. I see both teams that you mentioned improving in a very good conference. Will the improvement be enough to make a huge difference in our record and conference finish this coming season...I have no idea.

You guys have been very good and fun to watch the last few years, but don't get too full of yourself...I remember the 4,000 attendance game at Memphis not that long ago.

Yeah and Kansas also has nowhere to go but up. We stink. Let them have their fun. They had to put up with our nonsense back when we were good.

I do think it's promising that we were the poster child for not making the best of the talent coming in on the Recruiting vs Results charts that came out last week in the Recruiting Thread. If we regress toward the mean, then we'll get better.

Until then, we gotta take our lumps.

The overwhelming majority of Memphis fans don't have any issues with ECU. Personally I think it's bull**** to crap on any team when they're down. We've all been down, and we all know how it feels. You guys have a great fanbase and that's the most important part of all. Keep chopping wood. You'll get there.

Much closer to 6 wins than to 4 in my opinion, just the fact that it's the second year for that coaching staff its worth one extra win... 6 wins and a Bowl is not out of the question or out of reach.
