If there was anyone who made the most with the least it would have to be Jerry Sloan.

The measurement is by his peers.

First as a player. Nobody wanted to play him one on one. Selected all NBA defensive team on numerous occasions along with being an all-star that’ didn’t average more than 14 points a game.

Second as a coach. Fiery and as intense as he was it would be very easy to dismiss or ignore him because he whipped your behind. Why expose your butt whipping to any more publicity by acknowledging and tipping your hat to him. Particularly nowadays with social media we can hide behind anonymity or just let the news pass by as it quickly gets buried by the wealth of information spewed out there then forgotten.

Sports illustrated ran a cover article and story about the best offensive and defensive matchups early 70s. Titans like Alcinder squaring off against Nate Thurmond. Combo forward Gus Johnson of the Bullets matched up against defensive juggernaut Dave DeBusschere. The NBA logo, Jerry West pitted against Jerry Sloan. Skill versus will.

Respect!!!
The Bulls backcourt of Sloan and Norm VanLier was special. Both gone now. Both extremely tough players and junkyard dogs on the defensive end. From watching Jerry over the years, he also had a very underrated sense of humor. RIP Jerry!
