For discussion. Is this actually a strong possibility or merely hypothetical internet blabber?

Bad:

---- loss of most CFP share money

---- loss of conf. bowl tie-ins

---- difficulty in scheduling

---- less TV appearances and money

---- no conf. championship or accolades for players

---- less stability and input with lack of conf. home

GOOD:

---- could join an east coast based league

---- big savings on travel cost and lost class time for all other sports

---- new league would provide more local rivals and fan travel

---- more football sched. flexibility; less expensive FB travel

Current FBS independents:

-- LIBERTY
-- UMASS
-- ARMY
-- BYU
-- NMSU
-- Notre Dame
-- UCONN

Thanks. Post edited to include UCONN. The indys are growing. How about it MONARCHS? You should have better info than your conference brethren.
Well, they could easily get five regular games with other Indies

UMASS
UCONN
LIBERTY
NMSU
ARMY

Throw in a payday game against a P5 and an FCS game and they're over halfway to having a schedule that looks like it would me more travel friendly even with NMSU as a schedule regular.
ODU should go independent. Few other should
Join.

Not going to happen chief. We know how to play our cards in the commonwealth.
I'd rather be Independent than staying in this purgatory.

And were are we putting our olympic sports. The Big East isn't happening nor is the A10. The conference that is the Horizon League pulled our invite in 1996 and they still have the same commissioner, so thats not happening. The Summit League is to far away, the closet school would be 288 miles away in FT Wayne IN. The CAA is most likely out for Marshall and ODU. The only conference that would take us is the ASun and it stretches from Newark NJ to Nashville TN to FT Myers FL.
The Patriot League would be a good fit.
A10 and Indy is an interesting prospect for me. Any league less prestigious than the A10 ain't happening though.
Army already has their schedule figured out for a while. And UConn is unlikely to play them aswell, they are trying to get Autonomous 5 buy games to subsidize their team.

We already have games scheduled with UCONN in the future. Like literally this upcoming season
Colonial or Patriot for basketball. Independent or FCS for football. Look at this way ODU tried it for a few years and didn’t work out.
In season home and away with Liberty and UMass. That’s four games! Nmsu scheduled them and they are over 2000 miles apart.

Patriot League would NEVER be considered by ODU. IF ODU went independent for football it would probably be because they were either joining the A10 for basketball and other sports, or they were joining a newly formed league of east coast / southeast regional schools and there were not enough of them that played FBS football to have a full football league.

Why? You already have good regional opponents in WKU, MTSU, ODU, Charlotte plus games in Florida with FAU and FIU that Marshall covets for recruiting. Ooc games with MAC and P5 schools and Marshall is doing well. Seems like you're in a good spot.
The rest of us hope it is real.

If we could get out of this TV deal and let each school negotiate on their own then I'd be fine with staying. Tired of watching our games on facebook against teams from Texas.

No reason we can't AT LEAST be on local TV.
I like this thread. It seems to be forcing some to think rationally.
No. Didn't we already try that and failed?
