Unique non-conference scheduling is a bonus from the Gillispie hire that I honestly didn't anticipate. First A&M, now UCLA, and Billy Clyde is talking about taking his young Tarleton team back to UK. Dude's got connections. Great exposure for Tarleton, and for the WAC.

What are some other games to watch?

This is the kind of scheduling I hope to see fromt he rest of the WAC. Actually, Seattle, UVU and others have scheduled top P5's in the recent past. We just need to knock one off from time to time.
Coach Drew has said publicly that he is inheriting a mostly built 2020-21 OOC schedule. If memory serves correct, that should include return trips to GCU from SDSU and New Mexico. Lopes were also recently named the 4th team in the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament field (Thanksgiving weekend), which will also include DePaul, Santa Clara, and New Mexico. I hope that isn't where the NM contest takes place, but I haven't seen anything about the actual match ups.

The rest of GCU's schedule is usually made up of D2s, SWAC/MEAC schools, and lesser opponents who are coming through Phoenix to play ASU and looking to maximize their travel dollars. Maybe Drew's ties to the SEC, MVC, and Big 12 will pay off in the form of some decent road games in the future, but I'm not expecting much for the upcoming season.

I don't normally root for GCU except in post season tournaments, but I hope y'all destroy UNM. I want any team to absolutely destroy UNM. I will do the Lopes Up and whatever else is needed to help y'all win.l

Lets hope that Drew can get some good opponents for the rest of the schedule. I really want 2020 to be the year the WAC rebounds in RPI and gets back to a 14-16 Conference range, if not better.

I respect your honesty. Scheduling the likes of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Northern New Mexico is not going to get us where we want to go as a conference. And I agree, it would really help if we could makes some noise, as a conference, by winning some of these games. But I know one thing for sure: you've gotta schedule it before you can win it. Maybe Tarleton will be the ones to lead the way on this for the WAC. Perhaps BCG is thinking in order to be the best, you have to play the best. Even if they get throttled, his young players will be better off for it when conference play rolls around. NMSU and their big ol' arena won't look so tough after facing A&M and UCLA on the road. Can't hurt for recruiting purposes, either. I like it.

With all due respects we have beat a P5 school every year the past 4 years. #6 ranked ACC Miami, Illinois on the road, Washington State twice of the PAC, Arizona State of the PAC on the road and Mississippi State of the SEC on the Road. All wins. Our losses were in the final possession vs. ranked USC and #2 Kansas on the road so NMSU and are big ol arena would be just fine and still very scary, especially for WAC teams. I'm confident we would throttle A&M and have a very good chance vs UCLA. Of course they will schedule Tarleton. They figure an easy win. NMSU trys to schedule upper echelon teams but they don't want to play us.

We are required by the state to play and pay NNM and the other D2 schools in NM. For whatever political reason, NNM is on the schedule the most.

We are not there in basketball. We need to play a better schedule in nonconference and win some of those games. We have not won a regular season title in the Sun Belt or a postseason championship. I will feel better about the basketball program when we make it to the NCAA tournament or NIT tournament. As for football, I remember in the 70's, when both Tarleton and the Bobcats were in the Lone Star conference. Tarleton used to be an easy win in those days. I am not sure that would be true today, not with our football program.

Look at where we were when we joined the Sun Belt. We were terrible at basketball. Now we're probably a top 4 program. We shouldve beat Arkansas in 18 and #2 Baylor last year holding leads against both late in those games. We've come a long way, but youre right we need to turn those into wins. I wish we had a stronger schedule too but I wouldnt wanna play us either if i were most P5s.

We need to beat a power conference school. We need to recruit a little bit better. We need to become a top 100 basketball school. If we are a top four team in the Sun Belt, what does that mean compared to other conferences? Could we beat NMSU? How about GCU or CBU? I like Danny Kaspar. He is a very good defensive coach and the Bobcats play competitive basketball. But I don't think we are getting the talent that NMSU or GCU or CBU are getting.

We need some better talent to separate from the rest of the Sun Belt and we need to upgrade the nonconference schedule. We should not be losing nonconference games to UTSA and Air Force, like we did last season. I am hopeful about Bobcat basketball, but we are not quite there yet. Oh, and how about getting a home-and-home with NMSU for basketball?

Tarleton's 2019 team was by far the best to ever come through Stephenville. If not for Whitten being the gentleman he is, we could of easily hung 56 on SFA. He didn"t want to do that to his alma mater in front of their home crowd, so just ran down the clock. That team would have beaten alot of FCS teams, and probably some FBS. Were expected by many to win the D2 natty, and probably would've without some boneheaded late season travel scheduling. Just ran out of gas. I'm very interested to see how they do in FCS this year, if we have a season.
Chris Jans stated recently that he is having a tough time to get anyone to come to Las Cruces. Even the mid-majors don't want to play in Las Cruces. Everyone is chicken chit.

I appreciate the response. I wasn't as clear in my post as I should have been. Teams other than NMSU need to start beating a P5 from time to time to legitimize the WAC. In a recent Jans press conference, Jans actually said that NMSU did not do their part for the WAC in 2019/2020 by losing to some P5 and MWC teams. Our OOC W/L record reflected badly on the WAC rankings. When the top team isn't doing their part, the numbers suffer.

As was stated, we are mandated by the NM legislature to play one of the D2/NAIA NM schools every year. Take a peek at our OOC schedules the past few years. For every APB or NNMC, there are plenty of P5's, MWC's and other high majors on the docket. NMSU is not the problem.

All four P5/MWC losses this year were with an NMSU team dealing with 4 missing and injured starters.

I remember when we moved to the WAC and then Sun Belt thinking we were gonna light the world on fire and all that lol. It's only natural. We obviously have a ways to go in football but we're there in basketball! I'm excited to see how Tarleton does.

That's the difference between Tarleton and TXST. I am familiar with both programs.

Tarleton has spent the last 20 years not shooting for conference championships (that was expected). Instead after multiple #1 rankings and deep NCAA runs, we always felt like we were a piece away from an NCAA championship.

Constrast that to TXST, where years of Davalos's dougie ball burned the program to the ground and forced a rebuild with The Stash. I really like what Kasper has done and for the first time in a long time I feel like we are in almost every game. However we are still striving for 20 win seasons and a post season bid.

I'm curious to see how Tarleton adapts to the move and if becoming a small fish in the big pond changes things.

I'd love the idea of some plucky ag school from nowhere Texas becoming the next great thing, but the stats tell us otherwise.

Yea regardless of what happens I'm glad theyre finally moving up. They were trying to sell a move to D1 back when I took a campus tour back in 2009 and here we are 11 years later. Better late than never lol.

On the other hand one of my coworkers is a bit jealous though. He played football there and was also sold on a D1 move up. He was a bit frustrated when they made the announcement but overall is happy for the program.
