Really nice interview with Coach Shaver about his history, memories along the coaching path, and leadership. I'm not aware of many interviews he's done post-W&M, so it seemed special to me. I'm not posting this as an opportunity to Huge bash, or compare/contrast to Fischer. I posted this because most of us love Coach Shaver and it is an opportunity to catch up with an old friend.

Interesting tidbits:
- talked about laying down roots at his coaching spots and his long tenure at his coaching stops.
- it would take the right situation to coach again. He thinks about it, but is truly enjoying the time retirement affords.
- Addresses recruiting at high academic schools and the importance of fit.
- talked about targeting guys that they think could play at a higher level.
- Wants to decide in the next year whether to retire or get back into coaching.

Tony didn't even talk until 5 minutes into the interview. I think I would have liked it better if the host had pronounced Tony's last name as "Shaver" instead of "Shafer" for 41:23. (Maybe it was just his New York accent).

I know Ryan Odom and Wes Miller will get a lot of pub for the, now open as of today, Wake Forest job, but I wonder if they look at Tony at all.
Highly academic, small school in NC could check a lot of boxes for Tony, and it profiles a lot like W&M. Obviously the ACC is different than the CAA, but I think his offense could really thrive there. Now defense is another question obviously ....
I don’t think he’d get the job. I just wonder if he’ll be in the mix at all.

I kinda doubt it. If you haven't followed W&M closely, Shaver's resume is pretty underwhelming. 16 seasons, losing record, 2 post season appearances, 1 regular season championship, no conference tournament titless. I can't imagine Wake fans would be happy with it on paper

Interesting interview. The host jumped around all over the place, and it seemed to me Shaver responded well. From the outside looking in, Shaver is a respected and class guy. No matter which side of the W&M fence you sit on, the way he has handled himself and his body of work command respect. If you scratch a bit below the surface, you know Shaver has had a relationship with Wake Forest since Dave Odom's time there. I suspect most of the Wake fans remember getting beat, at home, by one of his Tribe teams. You can be sure the ACC basketball people, and the knowledgeable Wake fans, clearly understand what Shaver accomplished at W&M. I have no way to know if there is any interest at Wake, but your use of the "underwhelming" adjective is very shallow.

I'm not sure how many Wake fans would remember that game, it was over a decade ago, nor would they necessarily make the connection that it's the same coach.
Your use of the word shallow is correct, and that's my point. Your average fan is only going to take a shallow look at a coaching hire, and they would see that Shaver was fired from W&M with a career losing record. We know he's a good coach, but your average, or even knowledgeable, Wake fan and booster doesn't actually pay much attention to William and Mary, let alone the casual fans. He's not a big, splashy, fancy hire that would increase donations or ticket sales.
I think, if he decides to coach again, he'll end up at a place like High Point.

Not a lot of new info. Tony is just an all around good guy and his love for William & Mary radiates through the audio. He still doesn't give the impression that he is interested in coaching college ball again. Something I learned that I share with Tony, we both hate the transfer portal and what it does to mid major basketball.
