We need to just stop playing Troy. Thanks Mark. The gift that keeps on giving.

How many instate programs can UAB depend upon for regularly scheduled games? Playing Troy, USA, AL State and AL A&M may be seen as an investment in interest in that sport around the state, especially if you want to recruit better instate players.
Rotate it around. We should not be tied to a HH with Troy year in and year out.
it would be nice for attendance numbers but in state bball teams just don't bring crowds like fb does so not opposed to not playing in state bball teams just doesn't do much for us
Changing a state's culture is a long term PROCESS, not an on/off switch. For its first century in this state, BB was considered a "Colored man's sport" while FB was a "White man's sport". For many years BB was played in many high schools as only an off season conditioning program for FB players. For many years, HBHSs were the hunting grounds for such coaches as Grambling's Robinson, not Bryant and Jordan. For many years the latter coaches primarily signed Black players who came from previously white HS programs whose coaches they knew and trusted.
When JSU came to UAB they brought 30 people. When we went to JSU we filled half their arena on a Wednesday night. Same thing with Troy in the past.
Samford probably would bring more than most other in state programs that aren't SEC members.
Not saying we should play them or not.

I don't think we should rely on fans of other schools for attendance at least in basketball.

I agree that it is probably time to try to play Samford again. It's been over 30 years since the one short 3 years series in the '80s was marred by an ugly final game that led to not playing them again. The inclination to not play them was reinforced in the 90's when the one game we played them in football ended in the same ugly fashion.

FWIW, reportedly, XHCRE tried to schedule a H/H with Samford starting last season. But ADMI refused to sign the contract.

Still, Samford's average home attendance was all of 885 in 2019-20 and that was artificially bolstered by their "home" game against UAT at the BJCC which drew the whopping crowd of 5,476. Take that one out and Samford averaged 557 per game . I doubt they would "bring" more than 25-30% of that downtown.

Very interesting on Ingram shutting it down. I'd love to play them. If nothing else it's just an extra home game for UAB regardless of where it's held. I'll deal with driving the 5.3 miles to Pete Hanna vs. 4.0 to Bartow. I think it turns out to be a bad hire, but if Samford gets Bucky then there'll be some buzz there (and maybe some increased attendance). There's too many examples of good in-town rivalries (Lipscomb-Belmont is the main one I'm thinking of) for UAB-Samford not to be one of them.
That mention of Belmont reminded me I've always thought that would be a nice H/H series.
We played Samford on a neutral site some time in the past few years.

We won but it was a crappy game.

Looking it up, 2009-10 season under Davis we beat Samford 55-52 on a neutral court I believe.

That's right, it was at Kent State.
Heard rumor of a game with Kent State. Anyone confirm-deny.
Thanks

Yes it's true. Looks like UAB will host a true in-season tournament for the first time since 1996 and Kent State has agreed to participate.

Assuming this will be similar to Kentucky hosting the big blue nation showcase?

Yeah that would be my guess. Kind of weird that it seems like Samford is hosting one as well.

Kent State isn't a super sexy name, but they've put a KenPom top-150 team on the court 6 of the 9 seasons that Senderoff has been coaching there.
Avg NET of 161.5 including the first 4 listed.
Troy is killing that avg.
Hope we win and Troy has a better season.
I want to remember to forget that game we lost to Troy.
