3 of the top 5 teams in the country won’t get 1 seeds and won’t get a chance to win it all.
Sigh of relief for the “P5”
Dayton for sure. That's a once and a lifetime thing for them.
Did coronavirus cost Dayton the Big East?

1967 was only 53 years ago. At that pace 3 times in 2 lifetimes.
(UCLA 79 Dayton 64 in title game)

I wasn't alive for that one. So once in my lifetime.

All 3 of those schools had killer OOC resumes. Lots of blow outs vs cartel schools

I know but Gonzaga and SDSU are good most of the time. For sure the best SDSU team. I just don't know if Dayton can become a Gonzaga type. Is it a 1 off or like the St.Joseph's team that got the 1 seed once but was just pretty good for a while.

Obi Toppin is a once in a generation talent for them. For sure they'll be in the tournament in the near future, but it's hard to replace a player like that.
Congrats on the Dayton Flyers, 2019-2020 NCAA Men’s Basketball NationL Champs—boy did Gonzaga make a tough game of it in the finals
At least those three will likely be back in the NCAAs next year. Can't say the same for a UC San Diego team that went 30-1. They won't be eligible again for 4 years. This was legitimately their best shot (and last) for a national championship . They got hosed more than anyone else.

Bellarmine misses out too.
Gonzaga is not Dayton and SDSU. Gonzaga is a major program, playing in a mid-major conference. Gonzaga would have made 22 straight NCAAs this year. Dayton and SDSU wish they were on that Gonzaga level.

You didn’t miss anything
Illinois would have made the tournament for the first time since 2013.
Penn State first time since 2011.
Rutgers? 1991.

It isn't just the mid majors.

How about venues?

Tampa last hosted the NCAA Tournament in 2011.
Albany last hosted the NCAA Tournament in 2003!
Greensboro would have hosted the NCAA Tournament in 2017 but HB2 happened and they lost it. Now this happened. It's one thing to lose the tournament. Now they've lost it twice. The last time they actually hosted was 2012.

Dayton has a LOT more history than either of those two. They just had a down period from the mid 80s to mid 90s. From 1949-50 to 84-85 they had 27 18+ win seasons (18 twenty+) and only 2 losing seasons. From 99-00 to present they have had 18 18+ win seasons (16 twenty+), 1 with 17 wins and only 2 losing seasons.

I'll circle back for this one. Yeah, it might.

Much in the same way Butler's deep runs/finals got them noticed, as well as Creighton's consistent runs (despite not making much noise ever), this was a program that was actually trending back up again and had everything in front of them.

I would also say, could this have cost anyone else some notice? Like, what if Villanova made another deep run? They're projected to do extremely well next year. If a program like that starts jamming the sport, would it prompt the ACC talk? And Villanova was nothing to sneeze at this year...they have one over Kansas, almost had Baylor, and had something on everyone in the Big East. They were walking the walk, too. But, even if not for the ACC-speak, if the Big East took another championship in the sport home with them, does it spark discussion of more money for the conference? What does it do for recruiting across the conference? The college basketball spotlight stays on the Big East. That's huge.

It's all for nothing now.

They still should be the selection show.
I was looking forward to checking out Obi Toppin. The timing just sucks. Cancel most of baseball season, not March Madness.
This thread is mostly about the losers of the canceling of the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

I just figured out one winner: North Carolina! Their streak of making the NCAA Tournament continues:)

Except the WCC is a three team conference. How many from the A10 have danced the last ten years?

Carolina didn’t make the tourney in 2010 so it’s not that long of a streak.
