(08-31-2020 09:27 AM)ODUCoach Wrote: [ -> ]It occurs to me that all 4 of my grandparents died before their 70th birthday. It's not unusual, right? In this country, if you are a male, starting at the age of 59, you have at least a 1% chance of dying each year. When you hit 69, the chance is over 2% and continues to rise. If you are a female, you hit the 1% mark at 66, 2% at 73.

So, in relation to COVID, in Virginia, 2,569 people have died. 1,242 of them are over the age of 80. That's nearly half. (At the age of 80, men have a 5% chance of dying, and women have a 4% chance, long before COVID existed). Under the age of 80, we have the other 1300 deaths. Of course, half of those (651) were between 70 and 79. Of the roughly 650 remaining, 400 were between 60 and 69. We've had 99 Virginians under the age of 50 die of COVID. Do we really think it is sensible to continue to hamstring our economy over this?

Labor Day weekend is upcoming. It is a HUGE revenue weekend for Virginia Beach. And, I'd venture to bet that the great majority of people who normally visit Va Beach over Labor Day weekend are not in age groups that are at risk. The Governor is doing irreparable harm to the local economy. Why aren't our local leaders holding press conferences every day putting pressure on the Governor to let us open the economy up?

This. I could not be more disappointed in the VB City Council and Mayor, and am only slightly less disappointed in our state reps and local congressional reps. They are not fighting for their constituents at all. VB has the weakest leaders I have seen in my liftetime. I thought that before COVID, and they have only confirmed it when their leadership was really needed.
Looks like Chesapeake is beginning their process of getting the schools reopened.

For the first time in about a month, the Governor is actually going to hold a press conference at 2 pm today. Can't wait to hear how well behaved we are. I wonder if he'll buy us all ice cream as a special treat?

I firmly believe if Trump had never uttered the word "hydroxychloroquine," it would be the accepted way of treating this virus (but contrary to Trump's ineloquent words, it is not a "cure").

The point being anybody can throw a subset of data that tells what they believe in and make it look like what they are saying is correct. This is true for both believers of and non-believers of HCQ. I tried to dig around that website you gave to see what they are other than the fact their DNS is hosted on Google. They didn't reveal who they are and how they got the data and where they got it and are referring to various articles that they want to.

Agree. There is no other explanation for the extreme aversion to a drug that has been used safely for 65 years when we are seeing tons of positive anecdotal evidence.
95-99% of childcare programs appear to have been operating without outbreaks.

Let's talk about the "long term" health concern around myocardial inflammation; you know, the reason we can't play football?

The bolded sentence is also true relative to the decision to lockdown our nation. It was understandable in the early weeks, when all we saw were horrific photos coming out of Italy and then out of Elmhurst Hospital in N.Y. - - and a fearfully overstated "model" suggesting 2mm-plus deaths in America.

That plainly turned out to be a mistake. It may not have been obvious at first. Yet it has become obvious by now - - UNLESS you are not actually a believer in data except when it can be tossed out in support of the position you first espoused and now are reluctant to concede. That's bad enough behavior for internet posters. It is criminally negligent behavior for elected (and appointed) leaders who making decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of people.

I'm sure that there will be plenty of self-back-patting at today's news conference. But at the end our governor had better darn well be ready to fully open up our state. It is far past time for doing so.
Seriously, how do we get rid of this fool?

I believe so. There should have been an absolute ******* lock down when this thing started so it wouldn't have come to this but we are past that and if our politicians/decision makers have done what was needed back then we as a country should have been in a much better position at this point. Regardless of what i believe most people on the far left and far right will always find a thing to point at the other side. There is no ******* reasonable middle ground these days. I am hating what we have become as a nation. Its either far left everybody should eat vegan, ******* or far right racist redneck yee haw mother ******* advocating **** now a days.

You have a point - - and I suppose I am likely as much a part of the problem as anyone.

I just turned off the governor's press conference. I don't need to hear anymore. We all seem to be stuck in our own inflexible narratives. But at least in my case, I don't matter.

It has not. Thats the entire reason that its not approved. It does not work well with anyone that is older or has any condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart condition, etc. It was put through clinical trials and failed. Why can't people accept this?
