I sure hope this doesn't take and doesn't spread to other sports.

"...Imagine a team picking its playoff opponent. Think about Brian Cashman and the Yankees deciding whether to face the Red Sox or avoid them in the first round of the postseason. All on live TV.

Well, it is probably coming soon to the major leagues.

MLB is seriously weighing a move from five to seven playoff teams in each league beginning in 2022, The Post has learned...."
My hangup with this would be do you really want to put a chip on your opponent's shoulders by selecting them, implying heavily that they're the weakest possible opponent?

The last thing baseball need is more games. But don't let this distract from Manfred's complete mismanagement and cowardice in the face of the 2017 Astros cheating scandal.
I don’t have a problem with adding more playoff teams.

The select-an-opponent thing is goofy, but it doesn’t bother me because it’s not going to happen.

Im alright with everything in the new plan EXCEPT the picking of the opponents. Im okay with the league regular season champs getting a bye but then it should be 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. Then I would reseed after the wild card round with the lowest available seed facing the #1 team and so one.

Agreed. Heck, I think baseball needs to shorten its season a month, not expand it. The length of the season is a problem, and people outside the contending programs tune out after the All-Star Break. When the football season starts, nobody except for the die-hards are watching it (and that number continues to get smaller and smaller).

Yeah, this sure feels like an attempt to change the conversation.

It's not that many more games, keeps more teams in the running late in the regular season and attempts to keep the advantage with the higher seeded team by giving them all the games at home. That's all ok with me. The "pick your opponent" concept is a joke, and if this proposal goes any further I hope the adults at MLB figure that out.

I think baseball needs more playoff teams.

As it stands:
MLB: 30 teams, 10 playoff spots (33.3%)
NFL: 32 teams, 12 playoffs spots (37.5%)
NHL: 32 teams, 16 playoffs (50%) - including upcoming Seattle
NBA: 30 teams, 16 playoff spots (53.3%)
MLS: 26 teams, 14 playoffs spots (53.8%) - including upcoming Miami and Nashville

Not that Major League Soccer, or any other league sets the bar for baseball, but with 30 teams playing 162 regular season games each, adding an additional playoff spot for each league would bring their playoff percentage up to 46.7% which seems more reasonable.

I am not a fan of 50% or greater of teams making the playoffs. Makes it harder to make the playoffs than miss.
