I don't think this has been mentioned - sorry if it has.

Penny said on his coach's show that Jayden started because it was NCAA Autism Awareness weekend, and Jayden was born with some autistic traits. He said Jayden didn't even know about the start until pregame.

No one seemed to know this about Jayden or the reason for the start, and Wolo was actually speechless (we need more of those moments).

Regardless of what you think about Jayden's scholly or playing time, this was a pretty cool move to show pride and also bring awareness.
I happen to think Jayden is going to be a really good play by the time he is a junior or senior.
Thanks for the interesting info 87.

Same. I feel like he will be solid once the game "slows down" for him. Right now to me he seems to play frantic at times.
Jayden Hardaway DOES NOT have Autism.

Sorry.

I've heard people say this before, that such and such was born Autistic but overcame it and is fine now.

This type of ignorant rhetoric should go away.

The autism spectrum has been broadened to the point that it’s possible that a boy classified as a high functioning autistic could end up playing D1 ball.

But you are correct-there is no cure.

Nobody is arguing that someone is cured, but they are correctly stating that whether it is autism or any other physical or mental hardship; people are still able to find ways to improve, thrive and flourish.

Sounds like you're arguing against a statement that wasn't made.
This needs to be dropped ... Now. Before it goes in the wrong direction. Mods please !!

Regardless of whether Jayden suffers from it or not I appreciate any effort to bring awareness to any autistic issue wherever on the spectrum it may land. I know very high functioning people with it and I know parents whose 35 year old children don't know where to take a leak and are violent as in the case of a very good friend of mine. Parents such as he and his wife deserve special recognition and a place in heaven for suffering through a lifetime of erratic, wildly unpredictable and often dangerous behavior rather than abandoning their children to a facility. It's a worthy endeavor to shine any light whatsoever on this issue whenever and wherever it may exist.
I have a little experience in the area, hotshots.

About 23 years but if you want to argue fine, go ahead.

I can't stop you.

I know Autism and Jayden DOES NOT have Autism.

People throwing this term around to compensate for things like ADHD, hyperactivity, etc has made it a harder run on people who ACTUALLY have children with Autism.

I can go into detail if necessary but it shouldn't be.

Spreading ignorance about Autism has no place in our society or this board.

Educate your selves and don't send me your links, I have read them all a thousand times over.

No issue with Autism Awareness at all but false claims inhibit gaining knowledge and are the enemy of Autism Awareness.

I don't disagree at all with any of your comments here or in your response preceding this one.

Your opinions aren't universally proven or supported. There is a lot of data and research that opine that you can have autistic traits without having autism. If someone with autistic traits claims that they have autism, then I can see your point. If someone with autistic traits is characterized with having autistic traits, then there isn't a false claim being made.

The main points from all this is that nobody made claims about Jayden having autism, but starting him and stating that he had autistic traits, is a good thing. It certainly isn't worthy of criticism in any shape or form.

First of all, I put him out there because I felt like he could stretch the defense,” Hardaway said. “He’s not going to play big minutes anyway because he’s a jump shooter and he’s a playmaker. But also because he was born autistic. Then, around the third or fourth grade, he got better. I thought that was pretty cool. Me and (strength coach Darby Rich) talk about it, because he has a son who was born autistic and has autism.

Then based on this wouldn't it be fair to say Penny's usage is wrong?
After being asked initially why Jayden started Penny stated he didn't want to mess with the rotation of the bench.

I stand corrected.
At the risk of sounding insensitive, I don't see any reason for starting Jayden.
