According the Verbal Commits website, UTRGV is recruiting former Aggie player Kortrijk Miles, a 6'4 wing from Temple JC. Miles played his freshman season at NMSU before transferring to junior college. He is currently averaging 19.8 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.3 apg through 16 games. It will be interesting to see if Lew Hill can sign him.

Did Miles actually play at NMSU as you state? I thought he just redshirted.

As a true freshman, Miles played in 13 games at NMSU. Back then, he only averaged 0.8 ppg and played inside the arc. However, he has proven to be an efficient three point shooting at Temple JC. He has hit only 15 threes over 16 games but he is shooting it at a 44% clip.
Why did he leave?

He was apart of Jans first recruiting class and did play much. In Jans second year he brought in around another 10 players. A lot with experience that played his position or around his same height (T Brown, Henry, Queen). Maybe Jans was too intense of a coach for him, didn’t buy into the system, or he wasn’t productive in practice. I remember one game when Jans emptied the bench and Miles was in, I could hear Jans screaming “Don’t throw it to Miles”. Right then I knew he would be leaving.

It could have been a number of reasons. For the most part, incoming freshmen haven't had good luck with longevity in the Aggie program. To this point, only Johnny McCants (a local kid), Jabari Rice, and at the moment Will McNair (and RS Freshman Rashaun Agee) remain in the program; coming in as freshmen. In Jans three seasons, NMSU has lost a total of eight incoming freshmen for various reasons... grades, playing time, homesick, bad fit for the program, going pro. Jans typically plays mostly upperclassmen. Freshmen tend to sit unless they can complete at a high level on defense. At the moment, only Johnny McCants and Jabari Rice have ran the gauntlet in practice and are now getting significant playing time. As you know, Rice was selected WAC Player of the Week last week.

With regards to Kortrijk Miles, he showed a lot of potential (very athletic) but he also showed some deficiencies. He could not or would not shoot from beyond the arc. He was primarily an undersized interior player at 6'4. And, like most freshmen he was not up to snuff defensively for Jans system. So, he was coming off the end of the bench.
He will only pick Rio Grande if it's his only offer. No way he goes from playing in a big arena like the Pan American Center to playing in some high school gym.

You're right. He only goes on to play at bigger gyms like the one at Temple junior college.
