I, as a fan, no longer question any player they recruit because we collectively have been wrong, one way of the other, so many times. Just remember Ali Fayad. So many couldn't believe he was a recruit except for a few and he pretty much played/started from day 1 and has become a real difference maker.

Other offers: Grand View, Indiana State, Minnesota State, Southern Illinois

Good ball skills, good closing speed. He plays against some great competition.

I remember the great recruiting freakout of 2017 when we had just one commit for awhile there, some no star kid named Ben VanSumeren and it was the end of the world.
At 6-1 165 Aaron is still a kid. He will grow up.

I like that he is interested in positioning himself to go after the ball. He appears to have long arms wingspan and also hoops. In the film he reaches around, slides in front, isn’t afraid to cut in front of receivers. These are BBall skills translated to CB. More typically CB plays it safe to an extent, they are fearful of getting beat. The instinct to go for the ball rather than hand fighting and sticking your hand in the line of sight, tugging on jerseys, etc. is a plus for me. Defenders looking and going for the ball you don’t get called for interference. Getting a turnover on D is really a key to winning.

Hard to tell yet if he has the speed to keep up with fast receivers but even a step behind those long arms are a difference maker.

Continuing relationships in that league is a plus.
Okay, I just have to say something about our recruiting efforts in the Metro Detroit area. They're pitiful. We're getting shut out of the area by not just the B1G schools, but fellow MAC schools as well.

Out of the guys that we've offered in the area, CMU has picked up 3 in the past week. Buffalo got 2 today. Ball State has 1. Toledo has 3. Miami has 2. We have none.

What is going on? Why has recruiting dropped off a cliff? And why has this staff consistently struggled to recruit in Detroit?

You may be asking...why does it matter if we get guys from Detroit? Well, it's a talent rich area. SEC and ACC schools have been pushing in to the area trying to get these guys. Detroit has as much talent as Illinois and Indiana (the areas we're hitting hard) combined. It's the biggest metropolitan area in our state and a significant source of prospective students. It's also where a big portion of our alumni live. Seems we could kill 5 birds with one stone by really connecting with Metro Detroit.
Weird: Miami 25, Toledo 42, Northern Illinois 43, we're 48

I’ve also noticed a precipitous drop in recruiting SE MI the past couple years.

Stepney is a nice player that CMU was in on early, he and Reece played 1/2 mile east of me at Dakota(Balabani & Hall), and they both headline the Chimps class so far. Was hoping we’d make a push there but it didn’t seem to happen

Toledo has cleaned up with 4 of their top 5 hailing from Oak Park, Cass Tech, King & Cass Tech. Even Buffalo is in with their only 2 recruits from Dakota’s rival, 2018 State Champs Chippewa Valley(Claiborne). Miami who currently has the top MAC class has 2 of their top 4 from Livonia and Oak Park.

One can argue that it’s fine, we’ve had great classes recently with kids coming in from IL, IN, MO and West MI. Problem I have this year is that all the the kids (10) in the previous para except ONE is rated higher than our current recruiting class ave. of .8022. The main problem is that the relationships are not being built by this staff with coaches in the PSL, Oak Park, Belleville, West Bloomfield, River Rouge, Clarkston. All these programs that have been putting kids into the B1G, SEC, ACC, B12. There isn’t a pipeline to Kalamazoo and Toledo, Miami, Cincinnati, Iowa St, CMU, Buffalo have all capitalized.

Miami has 17 commits. Almost twice as many as
WMU, NIU, and Toledo.
Another MAC school reaches into the Detroit area. Harper Woods - Daveion Weatherspoon, 2nd highest rated Center in state 3* (29th MI overall by 247) goes to Ohio. Offers from Kentucky and Michigan. No offer from Western. https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Davion...Interests/

not going to pretend to have inside info. but somthing is up with this player because that is the weirdest offer list iv ever seen. a blue blood school, a sec school, 2 fcs, only 2 mac schools and army doesn't add up

I thought the same thing.
I was looking up top uncommitted MI recruits the other day and came across his 247 profile. UofM offered in 2018 but picked up the top C in state last month from CassTech. Not sure if the UK offer from 2019 became un-commitable either? I don’t have any info on him but it’s an odd list of offers.

Here’s the in state list. We’d routinely get the best kids not going to a P5. This year we fall behind Toledo, CMU, Buffalo, Ohio, Cinci & Miami.

https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Footba...l&State=MI
Big DT from River Rouge, #45 in state, goes to CMU. No WMU offer. https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Pius-O...Interests/
As long as we continue to put together classes from the 5-hour radius (including our own backyard in West Michigan), and these classes are in the upper echelon of the conference, I’m not going to be continually disappointed.
Ignoring the largest talent pool within the radius does not seem to be a very good program building strategy. Seems the luster is off that 2016 MACC trophy. HS kids don’t have fond memories of a WMU run to the Cotton Bowl. Their biggest take away from that era is that the HC is now getting 4* to go to Minnesota.

Recruiting has slipped, it has something to do with the product on the field. There’s still plenty of time to finish in top 3-4 in conference, currently 4th on the class ranking in 247, but I also look at per recruit ave and I see 5 teams ahead in that category . This regime has 0 landmark Ws. There was a time not long ago that guys were being drafted to the NFL. One could rightly question if the development is happening.
There are still some really good players out there in Michigan that I hope we can pick up. RB Anthony Tyus from Portage Northern, WR Jace Williams from Grand Rapids CC, and LB Austin Roon from Byron Center. They've all got P5 offers, and I consider our chances of landing them low, but if we can get some guys like that we're right back in the top tier of the MAC recruiting class. At least those are west side guys so we might have a chance. CB Maxwell Hairston (West Bloomfield) and WR Ali Fisher (Ann Arbor Pioneer) are two more that I'd like to see the staff pursue harder.

I don't want to see WMU get pushed out of Michigan.
Tough to be consistent, when program building, if any one of the recruiting classes falls below expectations. There’s still time for 2021 but the choices are getting slimmer. I thought we had a shot at a couple of those Dakota kids but it wasn’t to be.
It's refreshing to see people complain about TL.
So if you are being recruited behind 3 premium classes, and you look at the roster and see you will need to compete for the 3 spot, does that influence your decision?

Or is it more some kind of “meh” thing Too vanilla, too academic, too community oriented? Not enough action?

Who knows. Something doesn’t feel right. A disruption in the Force.

Tyus has an offer from Northwestern and yesterday Alan Treiu has put in a crystal ball for him to go to Evanston.

Toledo just picked up the highest rated MAC recruit (.8592) the other day, RB Willie Shaw from Oak Lawn, IL. His offer list included NIU, Ohio, EMU, Illini, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana and UVA. NO WMU OFFER, wait a minute I thought we were focusing on W. MI, IL, IN? quick skim of our commits and we’ve beaten Toledo on 1 recruit, SDE Tyson Lee. looks like Toledo has taken 7 that we’ve offered. so i guess if we had offered it would’ve been the 8th kick in the dick?

looks like we’ve swung and missed on the 9 QB offers according to 247, check that, fouled one off with the attempt at Easthope. ESPN/Scout has a 6’5" Dual threat from Indy, Donaven McCulley, with a WMU offer, but also 2 B1G, 2 SEC and an ACC offer, he’s not coming to Kzoo. TheDZone lists one in state QB with a WMU offer from the Muskegon Big Reds, Amari Crowley, but he’s a WR/S/QB on 247 as an athlete.

looking lean on the QB & RB recruiting.
