Tigerbrother

Have we caught it?

When Fuente left, we were devastated with the thought that Memphis football would return to less than mediocre.

But, it wasn't long until we saw Norvell recruit on a higher level. Then, the brand of Memphis football was beginning to be established.

Now it appears we've been extremely fortunate in getting Silverfied. This may be another step up. Proud of our Tigers. When defense gets to the same level as offense, we are a top 10 team regardless of what conference we are in.

Memphis versus errbody.

Let's bust our way up to the top.

Bright future. Time to get some!
Agree about Silverfield. Good sideline demeanor, good game plan, and according to this board, a good recruiter. I think we have done well with the hire.
Until we have the resources to buy the caliber (read: big, athletic linemen), that the P5s do, it can’t happen. Oh, that and the political pull to have our “indiscretions” covered up like the P5s.
We have been good a little while

In 2017 we went 10-3 with a double overtime loss to UCF in the conference finals then a bowl loss at home

In 2014 we went 10-3 with a bowl win over BYU and a tie for the conference title the year before title games were played I believe

In 2015 we started out 8-0 with a big win over a ranked Mississippi team. We did not finish strong but ended 9-4. So we went 10-3 and 9-4 those last two years

With that strong background we then went 8-5, 10-3 and 8-6 the three after that

The big difference is THIS year finally went beyond the better of the previous five. With any coach change there are nerves. But I like where we are and hope we can get that NEXT step in the next few seasons, while remaining good even in a down year

We moved the ball up and down the field on Penn State. A few tough first down play calls may have hurt and ended up in FGs, so the coaching change may have mattered

A little rebuild next year, but we will still win a bunch of games
I think the endless long and futile sideline pass attempts were a waste of time and effort.
Good game plan for a big game. The pick-six was the ballgame. Ready was trying to flip it to Gainwell. If he’s not in the grasp and completes that, Gainwell goes a long way.

Yup...

Gotta get some Athletes on Defense. I don't care who coached that defense against PSU they weren't going to stop the run.

So you don't think we competed today?

I say we absolutely did...Was our Defensive front overmatched....Definitely.

But our offense came close to overcoming that.

I agree, we competed, no doubt. No matter whether P5 or G6.

We do need a little bit more beef.

I don’t think it is fair to question coaching on a call on first down. We might execute or not, PSU might just beat one man or the perfect D call may flip an otherwise perfect call.

I thought the play calling was mostly spot on overall. I thought the game went strength on strength with them being more effective running than expected.

The good news is we hit 6 field goals. The bad news is we hit 6 field goals...instead of TDS.

The big uglies made a difference. Stalling 3 times with bad punts ending in PSU TDS hurt. A TO for TD hurt. Throw up any number of things we did or they did and in the end we gave a good accounting on a big stage vs a top ten team from the BigX.

Bull, plain and simple. We did compete with a top ten team.

We put up more points on a very stingy defense than anybody else did all year. I say we competed decently.

We need some big uglies to fill the D gaps on D.
The best I could tell he appeared to have a good coaching demeanor on the sideline. Also, the team appeared dialed in so a good start. (good with media too)

I hope RS has the ability to recruit other coaches as well as players. being a head coach is tough gig with a lot of responsibilities. hopeful though.
I think Norvell had a very big hand in developing the QB position.

The question will be can Silverfield continue to develop QBs, because I doubt we will ever be able to gather enough talent on defense to be able to compete with the big boys without scoring points in bunches.

Good start and good start coming back after halftime. both speak well of the coaching.

Well

Oklahoma got beat 63-28 today. Are they not ready for the big boys?

At the moment, Clemson is down 13-0 and likely to be more
Are they no longer ready for the big boys?

I think today Penn State was able to do what they do well. So were we. When they were rolling it looked bad, but it usually looks bad when your opponent rolls.

When we fought back, we had the ball down 5, then later down 2, where a score gives us a fourth quarter lead

We outgained them

We turned the ball over an extra time

We scored 9 times. Some bad play calls or nagging penalties made so many of them 2d and long which resulted in third and longer than it needed to be and settled for too many FGs. Those early down mistakes hurt as much as Penn State’s better line play. Because somehow we offset that to a large degree.

They, as do most of the bigger schools, have more better elite level linemen. But even with that, we made them struggle with our stuff too and very well could have won that game.

We are ready for the big boys, even if we are not as good as some of them necessarily. Our depth would be a big problem with a full SEC those schedule, but we had real athletes out there. OUTGAINED them and they were not empty calories. Not until they went up 14 was the game realistically over and even then it took another interception by us to seal it

None of which changes that getting elite linemen can really matter to CONSISTENTLY win games like this. We need more Means like transfers. Look for them.

Game turned on one pix6 late in game. Had Memphis drove the field to score at that point, who knows...

But I agree that Memphis badly needs better line play and depth on both defense and offense lines. In this game, our running backs simply could not find holes to get into secondary.

Please take a breath
My biggest disappointment for this year was UTK with their lousy season swooped into town and took 3 of the best defensive players. Not sure we can ever reverse that trend.
