For those who didn't want to watch the Toledo football team get embarrassed in a bowl game, you got your wish.....

However, the Toledo Rocket football team got embarrassed anyway..... by being the only bowl eligible team not selected.

While you may think no one will really noticed.... here's a few folks that did:

Existing 2020 football commitments (will they stay committed or even sign in the next couple weeks on signing day??????)

Coaches recruiting for other opposing schools (this will use this against Toledo in the recruiting wars!!!!!!!)

On the fence fans

College football media, locally and nationally (will be a factor in good, fair, or bad news and media coverage)

How about the players!!!!! and I'm talking about the team itself. not the seniors, but the guys coming back next year. Not the few that are in it for themselves, but the ones that really care about the program. What will this do their mindset? Their attitude? Will there be mental anguish or anger????

Did Toledo "deserve" to be in a bowl?.... honestly, as the season finished, probably not...… but you can't tell me EMU, Kent, or Ohio definitely does!!!!! NO WAY!!!!!!! Going to a bowl has nothing to do about "being deserving"!!!!!!!

So Toledo ended being embarrassed anyway...……..
BGSU is using the argument to recruits that there is a great opportunity to play right away if you sign with them. Maybe Toledo can use a similar pitch--we are a good team but need to plug some holes. Mr 3 star recruit can be the missing piece of the puzzle that can get UT back to its winning ways. Essentially, you can spin the Toledo situation any way you want. Hopefully Candle can get at least 3 new assistant coaches up to speed immediately and start using their contacts to bring winning players (and plays) to the Rockets.
Embarrassed because they didn't make a Bowl?
I'd be more embarrassed by the losses:
@BGSUX
@Ball State
NIU
@CMU

But it had to be expected after a Rocket team with NFL talent loses 34-0 to Appalachian St. That was
ridiculous. Something was definitely wrong.

The ramifications of being snubbed for a bowl will IMO, be minimal... If we lose recruits to bg or EMU, SHAME On US... The past 24 months tells the story of the downward spiral...
As much as I would have liked to have seen or possibly traveled to (Detroit-Quick Lane Bowl) certain things needed to be addressed... And evidently they already have been to a point... Also, if we are worried about losing recruits down the road because of being left out, JC and staff will be doing a piss poor job of selling the positives of being a part of this great university...
In the past, Toledo would not only beat out everyone in the MAC as far as the recruiting wars, but also would take on the big boys and snag their fair share of quality student-athletes ... The Rocket program will get that swagger back, if and only if, starting by rectifying certain glaring issues / teaching fundamentals / emphasizing discipline / and doing what it takes to get back to that mantra of - “ BUILDING CHAMPIONS “ again ... Go Rockets !!
I mean I'm less embarrassed than say losing to Nevada by 28 on national TV.
I'm less embarrassed we aren't in a couple million more dollars of debt for bowl expenses.
I'm less embarrassed we didn't play a bowl came coordinatorless.
I'm hopeful this will give us the time we need to revamp the program.
I'm hopeful we hit the recruiting trail hard and keep out recruiting the league.
I'm hopeful this down year kicks our players and staff into gear.
I'm hopeful we remember this feeling of sitting home in 2020.
I'm thankful we beat BYU, KSU, EMU and WMU at home.
I'm thankful our worst season in a decade is still .500.
seems like plenty of embarrassment weeks ago for a team in a position to get to the MACC and a bowl game:
L 28-31
L 30-49
L 7-49

And as to impact of no bowl game to recruiting let's wait and see how that plays out before making judgment

Terry, if the team isn’t embarrassed and uses this as motivation for next year then we will be seeing some bad football for the next 2 years. The sad part...I don’t know if they truly were embarrassed

Yeah, if the players and coaches don’t take a long hard look at this past season, then come into spring ball with a nasty junk yard attitude and a take back the MAC mentality, then JC /his staff/and the players should look forward to possible FCS status...
Alumni interest will dwindle along with corporate sponsorship/donations...
I will still support the Rockets in whatever scenario, but not sure others would...

Toledo sent a clear message that it’s season was over when they rid themselves of at least three coaches. They didn’t have to decline an invitation when they made their intentions clear. My 2c.

You provided a list of "a few folks that noticed". In what way did they notice - and what is the impact of noticing. We all noticed they were not invited to a bowl, but does that mean there is evidence the people on this board will not buy tickets next year? Does it mean all (or any) of the recruits have backed off their commitments - or any more that usually do regardless of any news that comes up. If guys de-commit because they were recruited by George, Ward, or Wright - that we made a mistake by parting ways with them?

I wouldn't over-react to anything at this point. There is nothing the fans did by expressing their concerns over going to a bowl or not that influenced the decision. Perhaps the most reasonable excuse provided for not inviting Toledo to the Quicklane over Eastern is the way we ended the season (3-5 with 3 straight losses, 2 of which were by 42 points and we only scored a total of 14 points) along with losing both coordinators and a position coach with perhaps more to go. I'm pretty sure most fans would take that trade-off to try to improve. Yes, it would have been preferable to be in a bowl game - especially one so close. But, the lack of performance and the inevitable partial house-cleaning had to take precedence at this particular point in time.

Recruits stick with a program that loses a head coach. There may be fewer guys thinking of going to a transfer portal from this team if we land some solid coaches that come in, lay out their expectations and philosophies - and opens the starting positions up to everyone. Maybe we see some guys step it up and become total team players if the reward is playing time. Their attitude has to be there and any toxic personalities that want to use this as a reason to b!tc* and complain need to be made gone. Scholarships don't have to be renewed.

I would have gone to a bowl game at Ford Field and would have expected them to play hard and convince recruits to sign. But I am not upset they will not be in a bowl. This is a very strong message to the team and coaches exactly how the rest of the country views this program right now. There will be no loud voices on sports programs decrying how Toledo was screwed out of a bowl game. That should be a wake-up they need to understand.

We started losing recruits after the BG and Ball State debacles. Anyone else we lose before signing day will be largely because the program tanked down the stretch, and our MAC brethren will use that in recruiting against us--IMO. And we all should be embarrassed at what happened from the BG game forward (terrible loss at Ball State, almost losing double digit leads to EMU & Kent State, not showing up for most of the NIU game, ditto the Buffalo game, and not showing up at all for CMU). Shielding this program from embarrassment would not have been helpful, IMO. It could have resulted in a doubling-down of the "good enough" mentality that has been accepted in all of our revenue sports of late. I hope that returning players remember this feeling and use it as Rocket fuel. I hope Candle understands what his limitations are & truly builds a staff worthy of this storied program. And I hope some solid recruits, particularly at O line, LB and receiver, see a wide open door for playing time if they are willing to put in the work & improve.
If we lose recruits I think it's because we mailed it in the last three games. Going to a Bowl Game won't necessarily "seal the deal" for recruits. Just my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, didn't the same thing happen to WMU last year in terms of not getting a Bowl bid?

2017, but yeah, we didn't reach a bowl at 6-6 that year. Although neither did two other schools (Buffalo and UTSA). We had a similar November... Injuries took their toll and we fell apart in November. None of our fans were upset we got passed over, we understood.

It won't negatively impact your recruiting. Unless it came out that UT turned down a bid (which I doubt), that's not a good look.
Agree with the posters pointing to the second half of the season losses as having an impact and not the lack of a bowl, or other excuses and other reasons including embarrassment and impacts to recruiting, ticket sales, donor etc...one bad season in last decade doesn't have that impact. You win and you don't have the resulting problems, its that simple just like at 8-4 or better season in 2020 stops the panic (where as 7-7 or worse in 2020 really will bring on the embarrassment and wolves). I don't think 2018 or 2019 season represents a decline nor recent bowl losses a trend BUT 2020 certainly will be a test as to real future for Rocket football. Given recent history, resources and facilities coaches should be still able to recruit a top MAC class in 2020, if not the future will indeed look blight but I for one am not ready to throw the towel in on 2020 or future quite yet. Its a long offseason to evaluate chances for a MACC in 2020 but also very premature to expect further decline in the program. And I really also don't care about out of conference schedule or record in 2020 as it always comes down to MAC results.

Everything you say is 100% accurate. When it comes down to it, no 6-6/7-5 team actually DESERVES a bowl. But, if you are eligible, you want to be in a bowl. Being the ONE and only bowl eligible team not in a bowl game is embarrassing.
