Because Penn State fans think they are Alabama and when they aren't Alabama, they need a scapegoat.

I am unfamiliar with other schools fan bases and their temperament. So my initial reaction is that of "oh crap." =] I have a handful of Penn St friends but haven't engaged them yet. I'm waiting to see what they say if it is true after the news cycle hits the webz.

I wonder what the ODU fan base reputation is? Because quite honestly reading their forum is reminiscent of this one at times.

We think we deserve to be in the NCAAT every year because we have a pretty arena; we think we should've been a final four team that one year VCU did it because we lost on a buzzer beater to the eventual champions and we beat VCU 3 times that year, when in reality we've won maybe one NCAAT game ever; and now in football we expect to be the next UCF and move up to the AAC when they inevitably expand in 2 years. Everything short of that is failure, and we must fire all coaches, the AD, and president.

How did I do?

We lost to the eventual national runner up on a buzzer beater. We only beat FecesU 2X that year not 3. So I’d say you did about avg for an ODU fan.
Thats the part that stumps me. Penn State was an inexperienced offense with a question mark at QB. Despite that, they had a pretty good offense this year (and good enough to go 10-2). What are your expectations? We know its a young offense because they keep talking about how everyone returns.

Rahne is obviously a smart guy (went to Cornell). He's thought of very highly by people at Penn State, who are thought of very highly by people here. He's coached all along the offense and has had success doing so.

We obviously don't know how he would do but there is nothing in his resume that would make you think he couldn't get the job done. And he's familiar with a lot of people here, he knows what its like here. And hes worked with some of our coaches during the summer.

Wait............does he qualify as a friend of Woody?

Yup. Since reading up I am down if he's the dude.

Maybe if we pay him 1.8 mil that'll show we're super duper serious about FBS. 05-stirthepot

Penn State fans are overjoyed that we might take him, and that concerns me, but I can think of a lot of worse options. I personally like the idea of grabbing an FCS head coach, but P5 offense/defense coordinators are probably the next best option.

I'm excited - let's hope for a great next coach!

When hiring a new coach, organizations generally go in a different direction. Like it or not, our previous coach was an FCS head coach, and it turned out his recruiting level didn't work at the FBS level.

I don't know if Rahne is the guy, but I feel pretty sure that whoever it is will be an FBS level coach.

and we've won 3 or four NCAA games.

Hire the best candidate, not the best name.

Everyone knows that. Come on man...You know what I mean. Kiffen created the atmosphere and had name recognition from the start. That brought recruits in and thus winning. This guy...meh at BEST.

He is young, energetic, and has P5 experience. There are certainly more exciting (well known) names out there, but we certainly could have done worse. Let's see what happens, hindsight will ultimately determine, but it is in the realm of possibility this was a good hire. Anyone we were going to hire was going to be a roll of the dice. The terms and conditions of the contract he signs and the end result is more important than the hire at this point. If we are paying him over $1M with a massive termination penalty and then he proceeds to win 4 games over the next 2 years, then we will have a major problem.

We are not paying whoever gets the job a million bucks. We are going to pay somewhere the neighborhood of 850k which will put us in the top 3 or 4 in the league. Most of the budget increase will be for assistant coaches.
C-USA bowl games revenue, per team. I am asking because we have 6/7 bowl games, this year. Does each team in the entire league get part of the revenue, or just the teams, in the bowl games? I wonder how many bowl games ODU has to be in, to equal one appearance in the basketball NCAA 64?

We have won all of three NCAA Basketball games in the tourney. Ever.

West Virginia, Villanova and Notre Dame.
Supposedly (going off someone else's post) he is making $600k+ at Penn State. Norfolk has a higher cost of living, his workload will increase substantially, and his national exposure will drop substantially. $850k might not have been enough to sign him. We'll see.
G5 bowl games barely pay the team's expenses. The collective G5 pool last year of $85mil is distributed by performance, with some equality.

I would imagine we'll here something soon. OR they're holding out for Beamer? Shrug. Admin is doing a good job of keeping things a secret though!

Good secret, I say a full report on WAVY last night (Sunday) at the 6 PM news.

I feel better now that I know Beamer, was never really an OC.

Keep in mind these assistants at P5 schools want to be a head coach. Most or many are willing to take a lateral move ( or close) to become a HC and prove their worth. That probably means moving to a Group of 5 school. Do they aspire to be back in the P5 where they make a couple million? If whoever is successful here , I am sure his name will be called to move on before long. Absolutely, but we can get an up and coming star at that price. At least let’s hope we do.

Kiffin was described as a spectacular mess in the pre-game before the CUSA championship since he is an absolute dumpster fire everywhere he goes. FAU is the first place where he's made it through his tenure without some sort of scandal. I'm not sure that's the kind of recognition ODU needs for its football program.
So put him back in the SEC and sit back with yo popcorn!
Yes. He is the guy!
This is indeed great news, way better than I would have expected!
Young guy. Very smart. He runs an offense that is very similar to ours. I don't know what he aggressiveness is and his take on going for 4th downs...we will find that out. I would think his strength is working with QBs but he made massive improvements to the run game (having Barkley and Sanders didn't hurt).

The PSU clowns keep saying he didn't want to be a HC. I find that to be strange and hope it is not true. If he didn't want to be a HC, why would he take the job (already making $600,000+ and I cant see us paying more than 850k).

Time to welcome him. Im hearing a strong possibility that Zohn will be on the staff.

That would be the icing on the cake
