McMurphy's tweet: "BYU & ESPN have agreed on 7-year deal thru 2026 season for the network to televise BYU’s home football games, sources told @Stadium. The deal also will guarantee the Cougars a contracted bowl game each year when bowl-eligible"
Las Vegas bowl or Idaho potato bowl?
Not sure if this is in the final deal that was reached--but word was they were trying to reach some kind of record/bowl correlation so that it would be the better you perform, the better bowl you could get rather than the fixed bowl affiliation each year like the previous deal had.

Since 2011, 77 BYU football games have been televised on linear ESPN networks. (Doesn't include ESPN3 or ESPN+ broadcasts.)

I mean, it's better than being completely stranded out in the cold come bowl season, but ....

As for the TV, that depends on the $$$.

77 out of a total of how many? I’m guessing the rest were on BYUtv?
That’s quite a long deal, there must be some ESPN+ games involved.

The P5 conferences start negotiations for their new TV contracts on a few years so that means BYU is left out of any P5 conference and they know it

Good for BYU and bowl flexibility is smart.

108 not counting bowl games. Some of those are away games though and were likely shown on other networks (especially against the Academies and MWC on CBSsports) they played ND during that period to I believe so that's one on NBC. Then any of the games they have vs the PAC, Big Ten, and Big Xii that were selected by those conferences other media partners. They also put one a year or so on BYUtv

I would pay big money to see BYU in the Celebration Bowl.

Including bowl games, 116. I went back thru and noted which games were shown where and ignored any mirror or secondary sources. Here is how my count worked out:
31 on ESPN
23 on ESPN2
12 on ESPNU
That of course is only 66 but I'm not sure what he means on the tweet by "linear ESPN networks"--could be some of those "ESPN on ABC", or ESPN2 regional mirror games.

Here is where the other games appeared:
12 on BYUtv
11 on CBSSN
10 on ABC
4 on ESPN3 (as the only viewable station--others were simulcast on BYUtv)
4 on FS1
2 on NBC (Notre Dame games)
2 on FOX
2 on SEC Network
1 on PAC12 Network
1 on ESPN+ (this year's Toledo game)
1 on FloSports stream (this year's UMass game-FloSports bought the rights for all UMass games and would not negotiate a mirror on BYUtv)
If we just want to look at the games BYU would have sold the rights to in the ESPN deal (6 home games/year), this is how those numbers look:
ESPN 15
ESPN2 14
ESPNU 10

BYUtv 10
ABC 4
ESPN3 2
ESPN+ 0
TOTAL 55 games over 9 years

If a game is falling to ESPN3 or ESPN+, BYU usually arranges for a simulcast on BYUtv and the tv contract guaranteed at least 1 game (usually the FCS game) for BYUtv. The 2 ESPN3 games shown here were a 2011 Idaho State (FCS) game (no BYUtv game that first year of independence) and a 2015 Fresno State game (BYUtv had already shown Wagner (FCS) that season).

Right, but many of those bowls already have contracts with conferences for both slots, such that BYU can't just be slid in to any of them necessarily.

Not really. Starting next year, when conference tie-ins expire, those bowl games are apart of the ESPN bowl pool. Look at the G5 bowl announcements. They all have "Bowl Pool" apart of their announcement.

ESPN is forcing the conferences to do away with contracted tie-ins and honestly its a good thing that could help make better matchups.

Good point. So basically that means "we'll figure it out when we have to", and as you say, that's a good thing, as it means potentially more good matchups and teams getting to go to different games.

Still, i bet it is possible for an unsolvable conflict to occur, such that one thing has to give way, because the one unknown is how many teams will be bowl-eligible from a conference.

The Fenway Park and Myrtle Beach bowl games that start next season will also be ESPN Events bowl games.

In the next bowl contract cycle, I believe the ESPN bowls that have firm conference contracts for both slots include:

Texas - SEC v. B12
Las Vegas - PAC v. SEC/B1G
Fenway - ACC v. AAC
Gasparilla - SEC v. ACC/AAC
Celebration Bowl - FCS (MEAC v. SWAC)

Am I missing any?

There *might* be an opportunity for BYU to play in the Gasparilla bowl if a contracted conference doesn't have enough bowl eligible teams. BYU's annual bowl pool likely looks like:

- Birmingham (v. SEC)
- First Responder Bowl
- Armed Forces Bowl
- Hawai’i Bowl
- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
- Frisco Bowl
- New Mexico Bowl
- Boca Raton Bowl
- Myrtle Beach Bowl
- Camellia Bowl
- Bahamas Bowl
