Willie Taggart would be a great get, he has the WKU ties...lol
Interesting article from Chris Vannini of the athletic on our vacancy. He lists a few names I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere yet like Ronald Curry and Curt Cignetti;

Can you give us a sense of what he thinks the plusses and minuses are?

Weren't you advocating keeping Bobby with a pay cut to save money over the weekend?

Not advocating just stating what I thought was going to happen. It would have been interesting to see if Bobby had not resigned what would have happened. I was fine either way. We are now in for a 4/5 year rebuild process. Plus the $ value just went up. lets see how serious ODAF / ODU really is about football.

I'm not getting this 4-5 year rebuilding process ..... I'm looking at Charlotte's first year coach going 7-5 and heading to a bowl game. I'm not looking for a national championship, but I'd expect immediate improvement with respect to being competitive and starting to be 'bowl eligible' (which is not that hard) in 2-3 years -- don't think that is asking too much with an FBS capable coaching staff. Also, I don't think that it is only $$$ -- that is a part, but I don't think BW would have been any different results wise if he was paid $2M/year.

UNCC had been recruiting at a decent level and had a stable of decent talent. The talent we have will be gone. it will take at least 2 to 3 recruiting classes to get competitive again.

ONLY gone next year if people leave. We only had 13 SRs on our opening day roster. It is 2021 that is the danger. 33 JRs on the roster (didn't look to see if any are non-scholarship). We'll have a ton of experience next year.

Many of them the JuCos we signed. Wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of them leave after this semester. For instance, I'm sure one or both of Smartt and Deweaver leave. Wolf is the QB going into next season. Williams has already redshirted. I think he stays unless he wants to move down.

Positives are the fertile recruiting ground and the stadium.

LR Hill is mentioned. He talks about the newness of it but also hints that it would be more valuable if it was completely football only and not shared with lax and field hockey.

He isn't sure how much were willing to pay, so that's a question mark right now. And he does say there are better jobs like Memphis and USF that are or may open soon. He then lists the candidates and why they may fit well here.
my $0.02 Bryan Stinespring would make a fabulous choice, maybe with ShaneB as OC

Thought I read DeWeaver already said he was going. Neither he nor Smart is of high enough quality to be Wolff's back up IMO. If all of our hopes are on Wolff next season, unless we have a better backup, if he goes down we could be looking at a repeat of this year. And he apparently is slightly fragile. I'd like to see us bring in a stud QB recruit who could play if needed, but hopefully redshirt and be two years behind Wolff. And we don't even know for sure what we have with Wolff anyway. Remember, Bentley was awesome, Stevie Williams was going to be a four year starter, Smartt was our JUCO savior, and now Wolff. Im optimistic about Wolff, but wont count that chicken until we see it win. Especially with our O-line.

Cignetti was brought up early on the CUSA Conference board.
Given the Athletic budget at JMU (61st in the Nation), which is now the largest in FCS, ten places higher than ours, and in fact higher than any in either the SBC or CUSA, he might not want to leave.

I still think we should give Grass at Jacksonville State a look, considering what he has done there with minimal resources.

Both coaches could conceivably be the next Jim Tressel , or not.

Its a high risk, high reward gamble with Tressel. Part of the knock on Wilder was he didnt know what it takes to win at the FBS level. ODU needs a homerun hire. Not sure we can take a gamble like that at this time.
I heard that they've already cleaned house and the only coaches coming back are the S&C coaches

i believe the new coach will hire the assistants.

But, the assistant coaches are still working for ODU at THIS time. That includes recruiting.

Wow. Figured Steinspring and Blackwell would stick around to run the program in the interim and apply for the HC or assistant gig with the new HC. I hate to see those two go. They were good catches for ODU.

A G5 isn't going to make a home-run hire. Anyone will either be a gamble (not enough HC experience, not enough FBS experience, too young/old) or a retread. No G5 head coaches are going to make a lateral (at best) move to ODU, so you're looking at P5 assistants, higher-end G5 assistants, FCS HCs, wildcards and former HCs that may or may not still be getting their payout from the previous gig. All have their issues.

Jim Corrigan and John Richardson might disagree. I know this is football, but the same logic would apply. Theres always a chance to make a good impression on the new guy, or even get promoted yourself. So I would think tanking on the program is a bad idea. Plus wouldnt it make them look bad to prospective employers?

You are right. These coaches offered to stick around for a little bit to see how things shook out (and a couple might be trying to get the HC job).

He's got a great chance to be a four year starter at an FBS program. Seems pretty risky to me for him to leave. Not sure another FBS program gambles on him while hurt, and he's got a better shot to play here. Nothings for certain, but Id be surprised to see Wolff go unless he hates the new hire.
Geez I didnt realize that Wood hired Willie Taggert at WKU years ago.
