They're horrible for the fans and for college football.

Its one thing when Vanderbilt schedules 3-8 West Carolina who lost this year already 59-7 to Wofford, but its obscene that a top 20 program like Alabama does it.
If FBS schools want to schedule an exhibition game against FCS schools, that's great. But no way should that game count as official wins and losses and no way it should count in the official stats.[/align]
It’s a great way to keep football at all levels alive. FBS schedule FCS. FCS schedule Div II. And so on. It keeps opportunities to play the game for everyone

Now should an Alabama play starters into the 4th. Or even the third. Heck no. But it helps college football

USC, UCLA and Notre Dame have never scheduled FCS. Texas has only done it two or three times due to schedule difficulties. Oklahoma normally doesn't do it anymore.

Schools like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St., Michigan, etc. should not be doing it. Its fine for the G5 and bottom 2/3 of FBS.

So you would be happy if everyone scheduled like ND? Is there a major difference between UNM as Western Carolina?

This.

Rules on this for FBS should be similar to the rule for Division I basketball, which permits D-I teams to play one or two games vs. non D-I teams, but those games are exhibitions that do not count in the regular season standings.

FCS is still D-I

Not sure why anyone gets all upset about the games.

FCS doesn't play under the same rules. They only have 63 scholarships. They are outmanned and by a great margin vs. the powers of the P5.
There's no way anyone's going to agree to endanger their players in a full-contact football game that doesn't even count in the standings. This isn't basketball; the risk is too high for almost literally no reward. Plus your gate is going to go down tremendously for an exhibition. Won't happen and shouldn't happen.

These are basically exhibitions and the people who actually show up does go down.
And the FCS teams usually are notably smaller and slower and sometimes do get hurt.

Those games count towards the 31 game limit.

Sometimes the FCS teams have better players on fewer scholarships. North Dakota State is a good example.

Some are exhibitions and some aren't.

Few years ago AState played Arkansas-Monticello (Division II). AState counted the game, UAM opted to designate it as their exhibition.

You can play two non-Division I that count.
Exhibitions in football aren't likely to ever happen because of injury risk.

What is feasible and I think would be a hit is 7 on 7 exhibitions.

Teams ought to be able to play in two 7 on 7 events with a max of three 20 minute games per event in the spring and one 7 on 7 event of two 20 minute games max in Fall camp between the 5th day of practice and 14 days before the first game.

I think it'd be fun as heck if say Cal were to host San Jose State, Sacramento State, and Azusa Pacific in a four team tournament. Pit SJSU and Sacramento in game one and Cal and Azusa in game two. Losers play game three and winners play game four in lieu of the traditional scrimmage a couple weeks before the opener.

Official 7 on 7 NCAA football competition in the spring would be fun, though unlikely to ever happen for many reasons.
Maybe if Alabama hadn't had a breather against West Carolina where they could get sloppy, they wouldn't have had a record 13 penalties against Auburn and might have won.
Why FCS? Not every one can schedule Rutgers, Northwestern, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Cal....

First among numerous concerns would be using them to generate more revenue. But multi-division jamborees would so great for fans and players, a nice break from practice and chance for lower division players to compete against better players.
I could think a summer scrimmage game as an exhibition each year like a P5 opponent to play Gallaudet as a fund raiser to help the kids at Gallaudet to attend classes and all that. That is the only NCAA school for the disabled and those kids may never play for a P5 school, nor play in the NFL.
