Rick Barnes has said that Tennessee will probably not renew the game against Memphis after next year and has proposed some sort of "TN Showcase" played in Nashville that includes teams from all over the state. I think this would be a great idea. Here is my proposal to make it of national relevance plus showcase the mid majors.

6 teams, 3 games a day played over Friday-Sunday

Teams: Vandy, TN, Memphis, MTSU, SoCon (ETSU or Chatt), OVC (Belmont or Lipscomb)

Memphis will play both TN and Vandy every year but TN and Vandy will never play each other.

So for example:

Friday:

Vandy vs MTSU
TN vs Belmont
ETSU vs Memphis

Satuday:

Memphis vs TN
Belmont vs MTSU
ETSU vs Vandy

Sunday:

Memphis vs Vandy
Belmont vs ETSU
TN vs MTSU

Would be a pretty good early season "tournament" although there would not really be a "winner".

I like your set up Brock. Personally I think you need a winner and it would be nice to go ahead and add 2 more teams out of Chat, Lipscomb, Peay or Martin although the teams from same conference would get tricky. Somehow get it to 8 teams, the 4 winners play in semis on day 2, then championship day 3.

Yeah you can’t have it set up where teams from the same conference potentially could play each other. Plus, Memphis, Tennessee and Vandy would only consider it if they guaranteed that they played each other (Memphis playing both).
I don't think the SoCon or OVC teams would mind playing each other in the tourney if the brackets went that way. The opportunity to play UT, Vandy and Memphis is worth the downside risk of a 3rd game against Chattanooga.[/align]

I'm sure they (OVC and Socon) wouldnt but UT, Vandy and Memphis wouldnt play if the potential was there to not get to play each other. The main attraction would Memphis playing Vandy and UT (from a national perspective). You would have to make sure that happened.
I hope I am wrong, but I believe that if this does happen, there is no way that the SoCon and OVC teams would ever be invited to participate.

You might be right but this is what Barnes said:

"We like the home and home. We’d also like to make it a big day of basketball in Nashville — not just us, but bring in other teams within the state and just make it a day to really promote basketball," Barnes said. "That’s the reason we’re going there that third year. I would imagine if it goes the way we want it to, it won’t just be us playing that day when we go to Nashville. It’ll be, again, like some kind of jamboree or extravaganza — something that will really promote basketball in the state of Tennessee.”

Not sure a tournament format would fly as I think each team is limited to a single in-season tournament. I would think the big boys would rather go to a Maui Classic or Paradise Jam-type one than an all-Tennessee team tournament - and my guess is that they get invites most years.

I do like the showcase format, each team playing a couple of games over a weekend. They could even rotate the location between Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis. A difficult part is setting up the marque matchups. Tennessee, Vandy, and Memphis would want at least one P5 game. Maybe invite one other nearby P5 (Ga Tech, Va Tech, Illinois, depending on location) to get a P5-P5 matchup and a P5-mid major for each P5 team.

Since this would require compromise and working together amongst several teams, I seriously doubt it will ever happen. But I suppose we can dream.

I guess I don't get the college basketball business. It seems like non-conference scheduling is hard. If I had a willing opponent that checks all the boxes, it would take a big concern about the program to not want to continue a series. Some of my boxes: competitive matchup, alternate home court, likelihood of a good gate and good TV coverage, play in a place you recruit from, natural rivalry.
What are the costs/challenges of ETSU hosting a mid-major version of this?

Bucs
Chatt
Tenn Tech
MTSU
Peay
TSU
Belmont
Martin
Lipscomb

Leave Chatt out and it's eight.

Maybe add in an occasional smaller college team if numbers were tricky- Lemoyne-Owen, Christian Brothers, Rhodes, Fisk, Union, Carson Newman, etc
The fans and coaches want to see/play good mid major teams. They are not interested in D2 or NAIA schools.

I would certainly be interested in a holiday/early season tournament comprised of the mid major D1 teams of Tennessee. I think it could draw lots of interest and it certainly, CERTAINLY!! would be a great improvement over what our non conference home schedule has evolved into (hot garbage).
Got to remember, the Bucs have been getting a big money game, along with a couple of mid major home games in those special tournaments. Bucs can't afford to lose those in exchange for having their own tournament.
