So, I'm tired of reading speculation that Mike Norvell will leave for another coaching gig. Looking back at history, Coach Bobby Bowden went to what was considered a "lesser school" and stayed 34 years, building them into a national power. Florida State was once on a par with Memphis. A single dedicated coach changed history for his school.

Now, I know that we are in a different era, but look where the Memphis Tigers football team is today compared to where we were a few years ago. Coach Norvell can and should get much of the credit for our current football status. If he chose to stay, what might he build over the course of a career at Memphis? I would prefer to speculate on that, rather than guess whether he will leave, or who might replace him.
The same way you duplicated your thread?

Not all that different. FSU was once an independent with nowhere to go too. We played them every year.

There will always be the exception to the rule. Boise. Gonzaga. No reason we can't be there. Hell, we already are. Top 20 in football and basketball and not P5.

Seems we have a hard time getting games with the p5 format. Back then no one cared about that status.

I’m with you bro! This gig ain’t that bad. He could stay here forever and make millions. He would retire a legend here.

Black belt in karate and stars in Vikings and Wu Assassins. She’d kill you in 7 different ways before the honeymoon was over.

Tommy West said it was too painful.

I would love it. Maybe Mike is that rare find that overlooks the uphill battle in almost every phase of the job. But not likely. He hasn’t said I’m home don’t call. We are already salary competitive with many P5 schools and we can pay him more. We’ve improved Assistant money but there is a huge gap with P5 accounts. Even with our new contracts the P5 money gives schools a huge advantage with staff and facilities.

The Arky job might be his dream job. That’s hard to overcome.

What a way to go! And you might as well go......cause after that you're married......nothing kills the heat like wedding cake.

I didn't know she was ordained.

If the Arkansas job is his "dream job", then I have overestimated his common sense. Aside from the current state of their football program, just the strength of the SEC West is a big deterrent. He would be destined to be behind Alabama and LSU every year, and probably Auburn as well. When your ceiling is to finish 3rd or 4th in your division, fans won't understand and you will be on a perpetual hot seat. Witness the Auburn situation. Malzahn is on the hot seat most years.

Right. Much higher pay these days. Can make a fortune at Memphis. Bobby stayed at FSU for considerably less. Bobby made $37,500/yr in his first contract with FSU (4 year deal). I know I know that was 40 years ago. His last year at FSU in 2009 he only made $2.5M though. Mike Norvell currently makes......

"This is hard man,” Rhule admitted. “This is really, really hard. People start coming to your door and say hey, ‘I got four million dollars.’ But you know what, I’d rather coach Temple’s kids. I love these kids. I’d rather coach here and coach Temple’s kids then just sell my soul for four million dollars. That is the truth and that’s as honest and open as I can be with you guys."

Norvell has been at Memphis for four years. Rhule was at Temple for a decade.
Bowden was done in an era where the smaller schools could actually compete with the top 30 schools for talent. He was able to bring in what we consider to be 5-star players. It is next to impossible for a G5 school to recruit 5 star players. Many are lucky to get an occasional 4 star player. The state of Florida has always been loaded with talent and in that era his only real competition for that talent was the U of Florida.

Believe that Ed Oliver is the only 5 star to ever sign with a G5 school.
