UTM 2019-2020 Schedule

UTM 2019-2020 Roster
Last year this was a disorganized squad that finished 6-12 in the OVC and 12-19 overall. But we won’t be seeing that squad. The Skyhawks finished strong last year (6-4) after installing 6-5 185 Rs-Sr Craig Randall at guard who became their leading scorer. He wasn’t eligible against the Bucs last year.

They’ve done a total housecleaning, keeping only 3 guys from last year: their #1, #2 (both preseason all-OVC in the Coaches Poll) and #6 scorers:
#2 6-5 185 Craig Randall, 16.3 ppg on .344 from 3 (not on the floor against the Bucs)
#22 6-8 210 Quintin Dove, 13.3 ppg and 5.2 rebounds (18 points, 4 rebounds against us last year)
#5 6-3 205 Derik Hawthorne, 9.7 ppg and 4.8 rebounds (6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals against us last year)

So we’ll only see 2 players that we saw last year. They’ve added Transfers from Pitt, Duquesne and Oklahoma, including a couple of 7-0 280 types. And have been rated #3 (Blue Ribbon) and #5 (Coaches Poll) in the OVC this year.

Blue Ribbon says they’ll start their most promising addition, the coach’s son, 6-5 200 Rs-So guard Parker Stewart, a transfer from Pittsburgh, alongside Randall. Also new will be either 6-11 270 Oklahoma transfer Hannes Polla or 7-0 290 JUCO JR Jordan Pierce at center, with maybe a boost from 7-1 185 freshman Eric Rustin. Randall and 6-8 210 Sr. Quintin Dove are Coaches’ picks for all OVC.

The Skyhawk’s only game so far has been a 106-48 win against something called the “St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics”. Apparently “eutectics” don’t work as well on the basketball court as they do in the pharmacy. ( A eutectic system is a homogeneous mixture of substances that melts or solidifies at a single temperature that is lower than the melting point of either of the constituents. I was sure that everybody would want to know 03-wink ).

This will be a whole new level of play for the Bucs. A necessary next step on the way to Kansas.

#11 Jalen Riley G 6-2 190 So. Los Angeles, Calif. Antelope Valley College
#34 Trenten Williams G 6-3 175 R-Jr. Houston, Texas Gillette College

Yes, I suspect some here have forgotten their physical chemistry - altho eutectic points are useful in organic chemistry, too. The anti-freeze in your car's radiator uses this principal, for example. Altho that's two liquids, it's the same principal. A liquid/solid eutectic mixture that's useful is the solution that forms when salt is added to roadways, sidewalks, etc. for snow and ice melting. Phase transition stuff can get pretty technical, so we can assume the team UT-Martin beat was at least an intelligent bunch, and didn't need to go over and over the same plays. I can imagine a 'concoction' of players in which the whole is either greater than, or maybe less than, the sum of it's parts. I think we've all seen that -- a la the 1993-4(ish) ETSU teams -- which would be an example of the latter. So is it possible that the St. Louis team was going for a play on that principle?

In any event, do we know whether or not they have a match-up this year with BaseballPop's team, Ivory Keys of Mapes' Institute of Piano Tuning?
But let's hope they don't run a "motion offense", which would then have given Martin a head start on preparing for the Bucs.

You guys are the best and wittiest. I appreciate the insight and humor. Always enjoyable. thank you
Thank you, ladies and germs! We'll be here all week.
Other than playing a game in a snowstorm, I've never seen an emptier arena. 500 fans at the most??? WOW.
Bad way to end the first half.

Which we will probably find a way to lsoe.
Just honestly not too impressed with this team so far. Definitely not the #3 mid major team in America.
Good and N'Guessan looked good 1st half.. Again turnovers and poor free throw shooting plaguing us... Got to find a way to slow Dove down in the 2nd half.

There were some Asun road games where the players and coaches nearly outnumbered spectators and Samford, VMI and El Cid frequently draw in the low hundreds.
I hope we can get it worked out but I see the same things that plagued us last year. Bad FT shooting, turnovers and bad fouls. We would easily be ahead if not for those things.

We look like a bad HS team playing in a bad HS gym.

Yep. Seeing the same mistakes and play as last year. Good but not great team.
Man, Pat is dangerous!
Glad to see us actually trap out of that press and force a turnover..
This is a WAY better UT-Martin team than last year. We knew that, but it's easy now to see why the Eutectics struggled against them. The Pitt transfer, Parker Stewart (who starred at nearby Union City) is a solid player. Seriously, this team could handle SoCon play. Maybe not the very top, as they've got obvious weaknesses, but they're a pretty decent team.
Our depth really making a difference. So. Many. Fouls.

Yeah - and when the lead got to double digits, Martin emotionally caved. They're toast.
By far the best stretch of basketball we have seen them play. Hopefully they close out strong and don't go through the "buc drought" they seem to go through and let the other team back in the game.
