Yesterday was clearly a great day for the University of Memphis. What effects do you think it will have on recruiting? We are currently ranked 70th by rivals.com.

It certainly softens the argument that if you play at Memphis, you can't play on a big stage.

You can play on a big stage and have maybe even a better shot at the NFL. Memphis is producing NFL players something that was highlighted by the ABC/ESPN announcers in the SMU game.

Producing NFL players from 3*'s and Walkons...

That is a huge selling point to a solid 4*.

But alas the biggest negative recruiting pitch is "Will their coach be there next year?"

That doesn't work on Penny

I think when Penny has been here 4 years, it would be roughly the same argument. Opposing coaches will say that he wants to go to the NBA or something else. Especially if he has the success that most in Tiger Nation think he will.

However, I think it's funny just how much people discount the love Coach Norvell has for Memphis. Twitter has him tied from every job from ole miss to FSU to USC. It will take a great offer to get him away after this season.[/i]

They did filled their roster with a ton of grad transfers, the QB was a former Texas Longhorn that played in 19-20 games with them.

I am more shocked that Tulane is no longer a cupcake anymore. Heck, no team in the west is a cupcake.

They did filled their roster with a ton of grad transfers, the QB was a former Texas Longhorn that played in 19-20 games with them.

I am more shocked that Tulane is no longer a cupcake anymore. Heck, no team in the west is a cupcake.

Good point. This makes scheduling more difficult than people realize. Scheduling contracts are done for years in advance. Hard to know who will be good. That doesn't excuse scheduling UL Laffayette, South Alabama, Ga State, etc......but you get the point.

Nice to see AAC getting recognition, decreasing the need to prove ourselves OOC. Life is good.

However, to take this program to the next level, we'll have to schedule bigger, better OOC teams. And IMO it's better to play solid football brands (Ole Miss) than it is to play good teams that are unknown (Ga State in next couple of years as they continue to improve).

Saw plenty of social media pics from recruits at the game. Looked they had a bunch in.

About these contracts yrs in advance, I'm sure we can drop a Austin peay or ut martin without much difficulty.

I mean, we're basically the highest ranked G5 team. We just came off a sellout and GameDay. We're all over tv. We control our destiny for the Cotton Bowl.

What is the upside to taking on all this additional risk of playing a P5 on the road?

All due respect to TC, who is a nut but also might be a visionary - much moreso than his other aliases here, there is risk.

Say we played at Florida instead of at So Alabama this year. Do we lose? Very possible. Then, none of the above mentioned happens. No high CFP ranking, no sellout for SMU, no GameDay, no Cotton Bowl.

There's risk. Laird, Norvell, and Rudd just have to evaluate the risk and come to the best overall decision about the scheduling philosophy going forward.

SMU is a conference game, we have no discretion on the SMU game, the cupcakes that need to go are too many OOC cupcakes.


Who cares if GaState is good or not, it WILL NOT Move the needle for recruits or ticket buyers,

The purpose of a better schedule is to recruit better--- players and fans.

And we are really talking about ONE game difference.

There are 4 OOC slots

We should play:

1- Regional P5 "rival"
2- One Buy game, 1aa probably
3- One G5 "rival"
4- One P5 other game --whoever will play us home and home.

This would result in 6 home games one year and 7 home games the next.

This is a manageable schedule that would maximize revenue, wins and growth for the program.

Two Sunbelt teams on the road in one year is total BS...

I think you're optimistic on getting a P5 H-H, and a P5 rival that is also H-H.

7 home games is preferred; 6 is okay; 5 is not acceptable.

If you can get one P5 H-H, and another that is 2-1, then you get 6 homes with a 7th home game every 3 years. That would work.

If both P5s are 2-1, then it's possible to get 6 home games a year, but it's tricky. You run the risk of a 5 home year, offset with a 7 home year. That's not good.

I think the answer, if all the P5s demand 2-1's, is:
1 FCS buy
1 P5 2-1
2 G5 H-H

Which is sort of where we are. But, yeah, the 2 road games this year were bad timing. 1 of these on the road each year is fine. If we'd had So Bama at home and Old Miss on the road, the optics would have been better. I mean, I'd just as soon go to Mobile as to any CUSA sites. I'd really like to see us with H-H with the MWC. But if you do that, you really only need 1 P5 2-1, then another G5 H-H.

If you can get a 2-1 in our favor with a Sun Belt team, then you could add a second 2-1 P5 team. Just stagger the home games. It's just that 3rd year when you're on the road at 2 P5's, it's going to be an uphill battle for the W's.

So what is the end goal...

If the end goal is getting to the Access Bowl every year the way we are doing it is the best route.

If you have dreams of getting into the playoff we are going to have to go with your schedule and get some help from the 2 P5 teams we play
