John Witherspoon died Wednesday at 77, but the comedy great from Detroit will be with us always — thanks to a variety of classic roles in movies and TV.

Whether he was playing Ice Cube's dog-catcher dad in the "Friday" movie franchise, the beloved Pops character in "The Wayans Brothers" sitcom for the WB, or Granddad Robert Jebediah Freeman on the "The Boondocks" animated series, Witherspoon always made his vehicles better with his fast-paced style and hilarious expressions of simmering grumpiness.

He'll be missed.

That scene from Boomerang was the first thing that came to mind when I heard he passed.

I know he was more known for his acting but his stand up comedy was pure gold.
