Not an EMU story, but so good for the Ypsilanti area.
Also very good for the Convocation Center as they will likely continue to host most of his games.

I only wish, and assume NCAA or the MI H.S. Athletic Association has rules forbidding it, but I would like to see EMU and Ypsilanti Lincoln play a double header at the Convo.

I forgot, but has EMU ever hosted a regional for MHSAA boys basketball tourney?
The convocation center may sell out for one or two of these games. All of games at Lincoln are sure to be crowded and every road game they played will be a hard ticket. Some of those gyms may fill up by 4 pm.

A point guard from the Detroit area has transferred to Lincoln as has a 6'5" kid that played his freshman year at Orchard Lake st. Mary's but is from the Lincoln District. I've also heard that a 7 ft freshman from Canada is now at Lincoln.

Who is going to be first to post: Which Ypsi team has more talent: EMU MBB or Ypsilanti Lincoln boys team? 03-lmfao

Me I will take lincoln as a 5 point favorite....
Nice to see! Wish it was YCS and not lincoln but at least he's not at Detroit Country day or something.
Can't wait to go see him live this year.

I will second those thoughts!
If Bates came to EMU for even just one year he would have the opportunity to change the EMU basketball landscape and the community's as well. He would not have that opportunity anywhere else where he could single handly change a program and a community. One example is attendance would be boosted immediately at EMU. If he came here he honestly could say I gave back to the community before turning pro. Not many opportunities in life where a single person can make a positive difference.

Amen.

There are many who swear that if the NBA had the one and done rule back when, that Lebron would have signed with Akron.

As 'Nickle has posted, Bates' team is apparently loading up on talent and certainly one would think that Murphy would try to mine as much of Lincoln as he could.

It would be great to have a couple Lincoln kids on the team including one named Emoni.

I could see all kind of scenarios where say Bates' father joins the EMU staff or the Lincoln head coach joins the EMU staff, in time.

What could be better for EMU, Lincoln and Ypsilanti!!

The chance of this stuff happening is slim like the then 19 - 31 Washington Nationals making the MLB playoffs, winning 5 elimination games and the World Series.

Even in MBB. I remember when everyone, including me, thought UDM would be lucky to beat almost anyone last year. They seemed so devoid of talent. Along comes the coach's son scoring 26 ppg and UDM goes 8 - 10 in the Horizon.

Very nice read.

There is one point, among many, which were very interesting:

"Bates could play three more years at Lincoln, play all his senior-year games at EMU and then go pro. He could sign with Nike in a year, end his high school playing career and wait for the 2022 draft. And there is a real chance that he reclassifies, finishes high school in three years, plays one year of college ball and then becomes the No. 1 pick in the draft."

So he could reclassify to the 2021 recruiting class which would mean that he WOULD play one year of college ball as the 2021 h.s. class will not be eligible for the 2021 NBA draft...

Recruiting the 2021 class is well underway. We have a 2021 recruiting thread.
As I'm sure most of you know, I live in D.C. where the sun shines a lot more than in MI (hence my 'sunshine' outlook on life) we are used to having champions (Capitals, Mystics, and now Nationals).

I'm on campus usually say twice a year but I do like to talk with folks when I make it. Once I asked someone in football (no longer on the staff) a question about recruiting. He said we can't ask that question but we look for hints.

I asked about h.s. players having girl friends back home. Why? Some h.s. players with very strong family ties, high school sweethearts, etc. might be hesitant to pick up and move say 500, 1,000 or 2,000 miles. Other student-athletes look about their 4-years college stint as a dream come true: Lexington, Ky; Research triangle area of N.C., UCLA and So Cal. How about U. of Miami and Miami Beach?

My point is that Emoni seems to have very strong ties to family and Ypsilanti. I'd be surprised if he decided to go to say Duke. I can see MSU, maybe UofM, etc. but not Duke, Kansas, UCLA, etc. etc.

This is where EMU fits in. If he is going to play one year of college ball why not stay near home, be near family, friends, school, etc. etc. His frosh year would be a transitional year from h.s. to the NBA. He isn't going to school X for 3 years to try and win a national championship... Maybe one or two teammates sign on with EMU.

This is my 'sunshine scenario...'

Wouldn't be a surprise to see Lincoln v. River Rouge put 5000 people in the Convo.

This article also includes Tate Mackenzie mentioning EMU as recruiting him for FB. He's a legit 6'9" 320 lbs OL.

Won't need a program to tell who MacKenzie is. He out weighs Bates by over 100 lbs.

That body and Michigan is no longer interested? I'm sure Creighton has looked at him, it's not like we don't need linemen. No reason to let a local guy slip to Toledo.

Well, Bates continues to play games at EMU's Convo and might graduate early.

If so, we will be tracking his recruitment.
