Him leaving under these conditions is totally different from it happening in normal times. Whoever gets hired will have to keep the boat afloat. The reasons expressed on this website that were anti Nielsen are pretty much irrelevant now. I spent one night in a motel in Columbus this week and it was down right weird. That night by my count of cars 25 out of about 100 rooms were occupied. No food, no beverage and not even any bags of potato chips for sale. Didn’t see a single business man on a Monday night. Just a few shoppers from Cleveland, etc. and a few construction workers. I think the hospitality and airline (and airline part makers like i was for 42 years)industries are doomed. Airlines employ a lot of people directly and indirectly and most of the jobs are high paying. There will be no v-shaped recovery there.

Very well said, and I agree with you Burden... with one exception. The fact that he makes more than $400,000 per year for doing a poor job and losing the confidence of all staff in the athletic department is more important than ever. KSU can't afford even a competent athletic director at that price under current conditions. To keep this department afloat will take a true leader who is creative and kind find ways to do more with less. Even a competent athletic director should not be paid $400,000 annually now. Paying him $100,000 to leave and promoting Casey Cegles would save quite a bit of money and make the department more effective. There is no room for the graft of high-salary personnel at Kent State University.

There is a "selective" freeze, meaning the university can fill a position if it thinks it's important to.
I doubt the university will buy Nielsen out. With Paul Haynes and Danny O'Banion, KSU just didn't renew their contracts. Saves money.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear this news. I know he could have been bought out months ago and we could be out of this but he has shown a resiliency to not only not get terminated but to get an increase in money. buh-bye
So let me try to understand this since I don’t have a degree from Harvard...
The guy who is getting non-renewed (highly appropriate after he did the same to so many great people at Kent State) has been permitted to eliminate jobs and shape the face of the athletic department for the next decade? A lame duck AD gets to fire people left and right while all along university officials have known he himself isn’t even going to be here in nine months?
Non-renewing Nielsen is the right move, but it’s being made way too late. He and Cegles have been allowed to destroy an efficient department for years. The fact the last three university presidents have allowed it to happen and have done so while continuing to pay taxpayers’ dollars to those clowns shows they are simply nothing more than a bunch of out-of-touch bureaucrats.

From what I've seen in higher ed management, I would say that it is generally worse than many of the worst companies in the US. There just isn't an incentive to be good and universities regularly place emphasis on items that don't move the bottom line.

No argument from me. They don’t even know how to manage a lay off.
The lame-duck situation with the AD is a detrimental distraction. Can you imagine if KSU had an AD who was a vocal cheerleader, had some degree of fiscal & marketing sense (and follow-through), reached out to alumni, provided transparency, & was creative? One would think & hope that there is a Sean Lewis like AD candidate out there. The opportunity is there to turn things around in '21 & shed the Can't State stigma.
It seems like we are putting a whole lot of trust in a president I don't fully trust.
