Appalachian State Final Report of the Athletics Feasibility Committee:

• “the committee believes that the best opportunity for success is in a conference of public universities that share similar missions and support for athletics”

• “Data shows that FBS athletic departments use a substantially smaller percentage of their total spending from student fees than those at FCS level”

• “according to the committees analysis, ASU athletic will have to raise its yearly budget by about $6 million; however, the committee concluded that a move to FBS will open new revenue streams that will more than cover the costs”

• Appalachian State was paid $1.25m to play Georgia on 9/2/17
• Appalachian state will receive $1.5million to play Texas A&M in 2022
• Appalachian state was paid $1.25million to play PSU in 2018
• Appalachian state will receive $1.25million to play Wisconsin in 2020
• Appalachian state will receive $1.25million to play Clemson in 2024
• FBS Playoff revenue to Sun Belt $17,079,796 vs CAA scraps $263,000
• App State hosts UNC and Marshall in 2022

cool post dude
The Sun Belt is off to a good start this year. App is a very good football program. They suck at every other sport though. They blocked a game tying field goal at the end after leading most if not all of the game.
Hey Dukeman2, what was the JMU score? I have no idea because I'm too busy rooting for recent FBS move ups, most of whom are failing.

Thanks
Potomac
App State is a very good program and has been a success moving up to FBS. In a way they are a model to how Jmu would fare. The big limitation that can’t be ignored is that despite another great regular season the current Sun Belt bowl tie ins are pretty bad. Most projections have App State playing a Mac school or Cusa school in a lesser bowl therefore these early season games at P5 schools are likely the best competition they will face and their biggest game for the entire season.

Isn't that also how they beat Michigan back in 2005? Seems to be their thing.
Appy and Wake are the two best football teams in North Carolina. Who'd have thought?

This. App State is the one FBS move up that has done well, but are still stuck in the sun belt playing crappy teams and in terrible bowl games.

the rest of the FBS move ups have been mostly disasters.

What is dissappointing is that there was a much better path for all of them. The CAA was actively courting App State before their move up. Imagine App coming to the caa, and ODU and GMU staying. You put that together and it isnt inconceivable you get UNCC and potentially GW & Richmond. That happens and you have a conference that could move up to FBS and a hoops conference rivaling the a10.

instead, everyone chased the golden ring and ended up in a worse situation.

and UVA and JMU are 1 and 2 in VA, who would have thought that?

It sure is. Michigan May have been kicking for the win though. UNC was kicking to tie it up.
Just looked it up. App was up two points when they blocked Michigan’s field goal attempt.
App state is much like JMU. We both have a winning record, a large fan base, we travel well, we have a great football culture, and our academic rankings are above average. For these reasons we are not a failing FBS program. Neither would you be.

The big difference is our philisophy of caring more about who we are, than about who we're seen with.

The Sun Belt was a crappy conference, but it gave us the opportunity to show who we are on a bigger stage and prove ourselves as a legitimate G5 contender.

We've done this.

Of course, we wish we had better bowl tie-ins, but for us, it isn't about where we go, it's about supporting our team. When App takes the field anywhere, we're there. People notice.

I wish JMU had joined us in the Sun Belt. You would have done much to raise the conference's academic, athletic competitiveness, attendance, and, rankings. By now, you would be the number one choice for moving up to the AAC.

But you didn't.

Great post, App St fan has more confidence in us than we do.
Capt Ed - can you let us know how the move up to D1 football as affected the following:

- fundraising - Yosef cub, sponsorship, ticket sales
- admissions - applicant numbers and gender break down
- attendance - community engagement
- branding - image and perceptions

Lastly - do fans regret the decision?

Appreciate your insight, but you'll probably soon regret visiting our board. Prepare to be hammered by FCS humpers that are going to tell you what a mistake it was for App to move up, and deep down your fanbase all wish you were back winning FCS trophies instead of playing in the Sun Belt.
I'd be curious to know if there was any division between the Boone locals vs out of area alumni regarding the move up. I think the majority on this board would agree that if the AAC came calling, they'd support that move. (I personally don't see it happening though).

However, on the JMU Nation Facebook page (which is fairly large), there is a noticeable and vocal contingent that don't want a move up under any conditions. And a disproportionate amount of those people show Harrisonburg as their current home.
Stop feeding the trolls!

You are absolutely right in everything you said, Cap'n. I really miss the rivalry we had and detest our former admin for not moving up when we had the chance.

You all did the right thing - just move up and do the best you can and you will be seen. Appy is definitely being seen. While we are playing Larry, Darrell, and Darrell's Drywall Finishing Academy, you are tangling with, and beating, P5s. Well done!
