Indeed. Even in 2001 VT was ranked 18 in the Nation after finishing 8-4.
Without the 1999 and 2000 seasons, it is possible, even probable, that The ACC looked at Syracuse, Pitt, BC, or even WVa.

Had that conference move not occurred, it is almost certain that VT would be in the American now.

This is not so far fetched. In the future it may indeed be that the 2018 ODU win at Blacksburg is looked at as the the beginning of the end for VT football at the highest level.

2018 saw a marked decline in all facets of the VT game. There was huge dropoff in defense. The coach may have lost control of a substantial number of players in the alleged conspiracy to lose the Marshall finale.

The 2019 Hokies are not a good team.
Often the outcome of a season is the result of recruiting 3 years before. The 2016 Hokies had their worst recruiting class since 2002, eighth in the ACC, and a national rank of 42.
That returned to top 5 ACC (mid 20s nationally) through 2019.
While it is early yet, 2020 looks bleak at 14 ACC and 71 nationally, so far.

With the quality of play in rapid decline, an apparent rebellion in 2018, and the abrupt retirement of Bud Foster, I don't see Fuente finishing this season.

VT was what, ranked 13th when we beat them?
So, it may already be that the beginning of the end of VT football as we have known it started with ODU.

I'm honestly surprised they're not ranked now. One of my biggest gripes to my Hokie friends is that they seem to be ranked no matter what and could lose a game only to rise on the polls come Monday.

In my mind it all goes back to last 9/22/18 if Josh Jackson doesn't get hurt during the game he likely is still in Blacksburg but the reality is VT downward fall started around 2011 or 2012



VT destine train wreck is starting to look more exciting than ours.

2012 showed a dramatic drop-off from 2011, and started an eight season period whereby VT has only beaten six ranked teams, and at least two were not ranked by the end of the season.

However, that one point in time everyone can actually point to may be the the ODU game of 2018
