If Hop cant beat a first year coach that Jeremy hired at Troy in his 4th year, then his ass is gone. And it well should be. Ill add the caveat that if he runs the table in Cusa, it will save his job. We may laugh at that idea, but Cusa is so terrible you just never know until you play them. Of course, beat Troy and i still think he needs 8 reg season wins to save his job. Heck, as bad as Cusa is, 9 should be the bar this year.

I certainly agree that as bad as CUSA is, 9 should be the bar this year (actually 10 in regular season would be my bar this year). But I have to respectfully disagree on the other. I think he'll be here next year as long as we look "respectable" in the west. And I use the word "respectable" relative to CUSA only because to the rest of college football it won't be.
What's sad is that you're both right. He should be gone, but he'll get 3rd in the West and the Athletic Department will count it a success. They're perfectly okay with being average in the worst conference in America as long as Hop isn't looking for the next big gig.

With that said, when I look a the schedule, I can easily see a 4-8 year on the horizon. Losses @Troy and @Alabama will throw us to 1-3 starting conference, where we play UNT, La Tech, Rice, UAB, and FAU. That's five games we can easily lose.

How does it feel to know that in the worst conference in the country (by far), we look at our schedule and can realistically see a losing record. And the fact that EVEN THAT may not be enough to have a new coach next year.
Hop is here as long as he remotely looks successful i.e. 5-6 wins a year. The he's one of us crowd loves him and he doesn't seem to have enough drive to leave.

If we get 6 wins and don't go bowling the admin will say, well the committees didn't like us because blah blah blah..

Actually that should be the nail in the coffin. Get a coach the committee likes. Preferably one that can win more than 6 games.
Hop got an extension prior to the start of last season. If we fire him this season, what do we owe him? Hop's salary is low because he didn't demand any money. We could have basically paid him what we wanted. We can pay a coach $1M/year.

If Troy whips us, that will be an issue for Hop since he reports to Troy's former AD. If he loses to Troy, La Tech and UAB, I expect he is fired. Our AD will see this as a sure recruiting issue that we can have.

Well, he makes about $500k per year and he'd have 2 years left so I'd say we could drop him after this season for something in the neighborhood of $1 million. We'd need to make damn sure we got someone better though. If we eat a million dollars just to hire another SWAC level coach then we're just wasting money we don't have to waste.

a few at sidelines have told me....

I laughed at 'em like Monk and Carr laughed with me...
You gotta think 2 straight years without a bowl, in his 3rd and 4th in charge, would spell the end. Even the stability crowd would find that difficult to swallow.
Could probably get Willie Taggart pretty cheap next year.

or even Charlie Strong. Read an article where he's in hot water at USF as he's lost 8 straight and after this weekend's almost automatic win (home game vs FCS South Carolina St), they're projecting him/USF to finish the 9 remaining games with 2-3 more wins at best. And due to a clause in his contract he's only due a small buyout the first few years of his contract (he's in year 3 now) as Texas is still paying him pretty good money. Should USF keep him around for several more years then USF would be on the hook for a larger buyout.

if he sucks there, what gives confidence he wouldn't here....more specifically at his age and net worth...

due to enrollment, USF receives ~64% of their budget vs. USM's annual allocated via student fees....their annual budget smokes ours at almost x2....that's a major advantage in his current state of affairs and nobody is seeing value at this point in his current state..

he was a DA to leave UL....it's pretty tough to lose at the #1 school (total revenue and budget) in the nation (tejas) and find your form again...he could've built a legacy at UL and nice bankroll had he stayed relevant...

disclaimer: mack's doing wonders right 'now' at unCheaters....we'll see how long that lasts...

disclaimer2: I'm gonna give Monk shite to his face one day for leaving and not seeing year 4 through....tampa bay ain' nuttin'....cleveland will roast his cods...

having said that, I take his arse back in a heartbeat...same with fedhat...

it was a no-brainer to hire Briles in our current (dis)position....Hop knew he needed help on that side of the equation....

thank you 'suck my rod-kneed'....(stealing the pic below from 'that other board' ... thank you MT-g for posting that reminder once again)

it was a sarcastic post considering how our admin seems to love going after defense minded coaches who have turned out mediocre at best as head coaches
If I were on the search committee for a new coach (assuming a search happens at some point), I would have one question for sure... Where do you see yourself five years from now? If the answer was anything other than - "coaching in a P5 conference making boatloads of money and shooting for a National championship" - I would thank him for his time and tell him to get lost. I'm so sick of the "he's one of us and wants to be here" mentality. Hire the best damn coach available that we can afford - period. When he gets another offer, make the best counter-offer possible. If he still goes, thank him, and wish him the best. I bet just about everyone on this board has had more than one job in their lifetime. Everyone has the right to move on if something better comes along. I know I did.

XACLY!

I want a guy that has moxie, swagger, and verve wanting to 'find' the next level....IMO, that was Fedhat and Monk's best quality at our level outside of talking X's and O's...

too many think baseball matters in scope until ya consider revenue potential from the other two....

That's a relief!
Hopson on team morale…

"These guys will fight. We're going to fight. We got beat and we accept that, and Mississippi State deserves it, we always get what we deserve as a football team. The positive lining is that there's always a few plays here or there early in the game, next thing you know you've given yourself an opportunity and a chance to win it. Football is football; it's a funny game...."

Allllrighty then
