This game feels a little more interesting all the sudden.

Roll Narchs!
Don't get your hopes up. UVA is a lot better than VT, and a far worse match up for us on top of that.
UVA is ranked #25, so we get another shot at a ranked opponent.

UVA's last two games: W @ Pitt 30-14, W W&M 52-17.

First ever matchup between these two teams, right?

I'll say UVA 38, ODU 21
It still early in the season, but UVA is going to have to convince me they are significantly better than VT. UVA is certainly ascending over the past 3 years though. Their OL is expected to be a weak spot. What they do have though is a true dual threat QB that can beat teams with his legs. I don't believe he's a better passer than Willis, but is a much better runner.

Their defense will be good. My biggest concern with them is their run defense has been really good.

They are on the rise, but had to replace a few key guys. Perkins running really scares me, we have to make him into a thrower. Im not sure we will be able to throw much on them.

I don't see it that much more different than the VT game.

I think UVA is about where they are ranked. I think VT is bottom of the ACC from what I have seen so far. That is not a good team.

As far as the matchup, UVA is physical and disciplined. That is what concerns me about us matching up with them.
If there's a team that historically chokes more than the Chokies it's the Boo Hoo's. That's what I'm counting on for us to pull out the win and I'll take it if it happens.

ODU 17 - UVA 10

They commit a bunch of turnovers and we capitalize on a few.

I like it. Hopefully our boys get settled and find a grove by then. We need Smartt and WR's to be in good sync ala Larussa and TF/JD.
I just hope our players don’t get caught looking past UVA in preparation for the big showdown with ECU.

No way. In my opinion, ECU is the bigger game for many reasons, but to the players, I would imagine facing UVA is even more exciting. I'll go with UVA, 38 - ODU 20
This is not to sound negative because it's still early in the process for Smartt and there is enough there to tell me he won't be another SB or SW. Smartt has to do a better job scanning the field before he dances around the pocket and takes off and runs, surprisingly the oline has created a pocket a few times and the WRs have been open and he takes off running. We need to capitalize on the times the WRs and the check downs are open before running for a negative or minimum gain.

Before the game, Smartt said he picked ODU because of the offense we ran in 2018, the same was said when Kumah was asked the same question. If we could get 200-250 yards in the air along with the rushing yards we probably beat VT Saturday.

I find it interesting when we hurried and didn't huddle vs. VT Smartt operated well.

When Smartt got hurt they should have let Deweaver finish the drive as there was no drop in production and we were moving the ball. The drive stalled out once Smartt reenter.

UVA runs a true 3-4 defense, not something we see all the time.
They have good size up front and their DBs are mostly 6 footers, with speed.
This Cavalier defense matches up well against us, better than VT's vs the run and short passes.
However, the Jury is still out because although it held Pitt to 14 points, Pitt could only score 20 on Ohio even with almost 500 yards of offense.
In any event this will be the best defense we will face this year

On offense the Cavs have a very good RB in Wayne Taulapapa, and an excellent WR corps led by 6'3 Sr Hasise Dubois. Even so, the CAV offense is is mostly about QB Bryce Perkins. He can scramble, run, throw on the run, throw short, and throw long. This will be the most prolific offense we will face this year by far.

On offense, our WR position is by far the weakest. WR is not just about running a base route and catching a ball. It is about making the proper reads in synch with the QB reads, about being able to come back for a ball at the end of the route, about extending a play if necessary in synch with the QB, and about going up and fighting for the ball in close coverage. These skills take time to develop.
In order to compensate for the inexperience at WR, Coltluv put it best:

On defense I was interested to see that our scheme appeared to be very similar to the old Tom Landry Flex. We pre-positioned our gap coverage (this may be why it appeared we were slow to react sometimes) or slid along the line protecting the edges from big running plays and options. We also played soft on the corners preventing the big passing play. This scheme however negated putting a whole lot of pressure on the QB.
I am not sure how we want to approach this vs Perkins.
The defense worked pretty well vs VT, but I fear Perkins will be very effective with short passes. UVA had 20 completions vs Pitt with an average of 5.3 yards, so any pressure on him may be for naught anyway.

Bottom line, this UVA squad is the best team we have ever faced as a program.

UVA 41, ODU 10

If we can avoid injury and learn from this, the rest of the season is downhill and I like our prospects going forward.

I mean, we got what 1 first down with DeWeaver in the game? Not really seeing it. Smartt is also a much better QB at this point. It's been evident all camp.
Rumors at the UVA board have a 1:00 Kickoff.

I said we should have let Deweaver finish the drive since we were moving, I didn't say Deweaver was better or that he should take over the starting role. He had the fresh legs and with 25 yards to go, insert Smartt who threw 3 incomplete passes and turned the drive over to the Hokies, who knows if the outcome would have been the same results with that drive but I would have liked to see him finished the drive.
