What was looking like a needed break between our two big P5 road games looks much less so after last night.

GSU went into Tennessee and came out with a 38-30 win that was not as close as the final score indicated. (Tennessee scored a garbage TD with 2 seconds left.)

The game closed TENN -25.5 at most shops. The 33.5 point difference between the closing number and the result will certainly contend for the biggest pointspread-result differential in the FBS this season.

GSU completely dominated the 2nd half.

This was no fluke win. They were only outgained by 52 yards and they won the turnover battle 3-1.

This is a VASTLY improved team over last year.

You'd think so.

Watching that game, something went really wrong with the Vols at halftime. They were AWFUL in the second half, to the point of wondering if they had quit. This wasn't about Georgia State coming out and killing it at all.
It makes our noncon schedule that much better. Should we pull off the upset in EL and beat GaSt we should get serious consideration for top 25 early. Not really sure what happened to Tennessee’s football program but it’s not good and I wonder how they still attract top tier recruit$.
How come we never get upsets like that. 03-hissyfit03-hissyfit03-hissyfit
I can’t imagine GaSt improved THAT much since last season. We dominated them last year with our horrendous defense. Tennessee must by abysmal this year!

They shouldn't be. They have a lot of nice pieces back and they recruited well. Their problems are in both trenches though, and that may make for a long season in Knoxville.

That said, I stand by my OP. Georgia State is a much better ballclub than a year ago.

Sometimes the light bulb just goes on all of a sudden and everything clicks.

What part of Georgia State did you see yesterday that would give us so much trouble?
Well GaState obviously won't come into Waldo feeling like road dogs.

And our team should definitely be taking them more seriously than if they had lost on Rocky Top and because we beat them last year.

It was REALLY profound!

Or wishful thinking.......03-phew
Didn't see the game so I can't speak to that.

Still huge win for GaState regardless of how it played out.

As far as Tennessee - don't know if they'll be "abysmal" this season but their football program has been a hot dysfunctional mess for many years.

Hiring one of Saint Nick's boys (Pruitt) obviously hasn't proven a quick fix.
They were BAD. And they quit, was hard to see a once proud, great program with a bunch of players that DGAF. After the game you'd have thought they had just gone through a light walk through based on their body language.
Tennessee was 5-7 last year. Would it be crazy, especially being in the SEC, to go 3-9? Not crazy.

But even a 3-9 SEC team should at least (closely) win over a slightly-above-average mid-major.

I think it's a combo of Tennessee having a disappointing year AFTER a 5-7 season -- slipping down instead of up -- while GA-State taking a firm notch Upwards, going into an 8W-level season.

I could care less what it is as long as we come out with a “W.” in 2 weeks.

And yes, teams sometimes have “light bulb” moments.

Our 2014 team had one at halftime of the Ball State game.

(And yes, Randy, I know that’s meaningless to you since PJ was coaching at the time.)

Solid points! Well said.
Last year Old Dominion beat #13 Virginia Tech, ended up finishing 4-8. Last year Akron beat Big 10 West Champion Northwestern, ended up finishing 4-8.

Georgia St upsetting Tennessee doesn't mean they're suddenly going to go undefeated.

I'm hoping they're good and we beat them anyways, but definitely don't want to overlook them.

Points well taken.

True. It's too early to tell in this season with 100% confidence. That said, I wouldn't want to bet they'll be under .500 this year. But yeah, wouldn't be shocking if they just squeaked into bowl-eligibility by end of season.
Ga State is good, no doubt. However, them beating the Vols isn't the same as Valdosta State beating Alabama. Tennessee football hasn't been stellar in a decade.
I watched that game, and Ga St is good. It appears to be a program on the rise. Both teams I follow closely, WMU and Army play Ga St this season, and I am very concerned. Not a game that can be taken for granted. Beating an SEC team with a long football history is a big deal.
