It's September 1st, and the MW has notched wins over the ACC, SEC, B1G, and PAC.

And, they were the #1 G5 conference last year in the CFP rankings.

Are they the real G5 Power?

Yes I think so

A Houston win tonight would go a long way, but I don't think they win

I was surprised the Bulls got dominated by Wisconsin.

That wasn’t really a shocker—the Bulls lost their last 6 games of 2018. None of of those losses were by a single score and only 2 were within 10 points. I hoped USF would do well or even win—but I had no real expectation that they would beat Wisconsin. Outside of a few years with the very talented Teddy Bridgewater—Charlie Strong hasn’t been very impressive as a head coach. If he doesn’t get things turned around real fast—he may not get another HC opportunity for quite some time. For now—that’s 7 losses in a row for Strong....and counting.
MWC had some nice upsets. We’ll see how teams endure through the season.
Could be there are really only 2 options

I expected a bad defeat at the hands of Wiscinson, but noy that bad.
AAC coaches have been raided a ton in the playoff era, and the MWC might have some depth this year. Could be an interesting chase for the NY6 bowl.
The big takeaway for the MW is all teams were competitive even in the losses. CSU was the biggest loss but they were in the lead a couple of times till mid-4th qtr.

In addition, 3 MW teams had large deficits to overcome to win.

How do you figure this? In the final CFP ranking, there were only 3 G5 schools: UCF at #8, Fresno State at #21, and Boise State at #25. You can't accurately judge entire conferences by the CFP rankings, since they don't include all the schools.

Because it was determined by giving the MW the biggest portion of the performance pool.

The Boise win I definitely take with a grain of salt. Willie taggart is a joke
MWC had a monster week 1 despite a lot of uncertainty.

AAC is 8-3 and doesn't have a bad loss.

MAC doesn't scare me. SBC and CUSA already have a raft of bad losses AND losses to the AAC on the books.

MWC holds the lead unless UH stuns OU in Norman. A lot of football to be played.

The bottom half of the SEC was really poor.

Independent of the final CFP rankings, and who gets the automatic G5 spot in an NY6 bowl, the CFP determines overall rankings for the G5 conferences, because part of the G5 money pool is performance based.

Last year, the MW finished as the #1 G5 conference in the CFP rankings, and thus got the largest share of that money pool.

So far, in the five years of the CFP, the AAC has finished #1 three times, the MW twice.

But if this document from NCAA.org is correct, the AAC received the greatest CFP payout of the G5 conferences for the 2018-19 bowl season.

Quote:According to a source close to the Sun Belt, the conference will receive $17.2 million for the 2018 football season, which is the third-highest figure among the Group of Five conferences. The Mountain West will receive the highest amount with $20.4 million, followed by the American Athletic Conference with $18.8 million.

The Sun Belt’s share is about $2 million higher than Conference USA ($15.6 million) and more than $3 million higher than the Mid-American Conference ($14 million).

Quote:Computer rankings for Group of Five leagues

The Group of Five is getting $86 million from the College Football Playoff this season, roughly $70 million of which will be divided evenly amount the five leagues. The remaining $16 million is dispersed based off of performance rankings by the six computer polls formerly used by the Bowl Championship Series.

Here is the average rankings for Group of Five conferences in the computer polls:

1. Mountain West - 78.167
2. American - 80.139
3. Sun Belt - 83.083
4. C-USA - 91.262
5. MAC - 92.986

So the AAC received the most money because UCF's NY6 appearance put them over the top.

Not to rain on your parade, but the schedule is not going to get easier next week:

Marshall at Boise State
Wyoming at Texas State
Minnesota at Fresno State
Oregon State at Hawai‘i
Nevada at Oregon
San Diego State at UCLA
Tulsa at San José State
Arkansas State at UNLV

UCLA looked terrible, but SDSU was not exactly lighting it up in their 6-0 win over Weber State. Oregon should be an angry football team after they choked away that game against Auburn. Wyoming just won their championship game, so their game at Texas State has letdown and upset written all over it.

Good take. Yes, props to the MW for a good week but let's look a bit closer at the numbers for week 1:

MW went 9-3 overall but 5 wins were against FCS teams.
AAC went 8-3 overall with 4 wins against FCS teams.

AAC went 2-0 against other G5 opponents [Arkansas St & Florida International].
MW didn't play against any G5 teams.

MW went 4-3 against P5 opponents but 1-3 on the road and none against ranked teams.
AAC went 2-3 against P5 opponents and 0-3 on the road and played against 2 ranked teams [#18 Michigan St/#19 Wisconsin].

Houston goes on the road against #4 Oklahoma tonight so that is likely a loss as well.
It was a good start for the MWC but there’s so much football left to be played that it’s too early to draw any conclusions.

Quo is right about the rankings, and you reached the right conclusion about the money.
From those revenue distribution numbers, you can reverse engineer the $12.7M base, the $1.4M performance share value, and the $6M NY6 bowl payment ($4M to the conference, plus $2M to the conference earmarked for expenses for the participating team).
mwc got five performance shares and AAC four.

FWIW, I never said the MW got the most overall CFP money, just that they got the most money from that segment of the G5 pool that is 'merit based' on the CFP rankings of the G5 conferences.

Last year was an unusual year, in that the conference that was ranked #1 was not the conference that put a team in the NY6. IIRC, every other year it has been the case that the conference that was ranked #1 also had the NY6 rep.

And since the NY6 spot comes with extra money, than yes, that can allow a conference ranked #2 in the G5 rankings to nevertheless get the largest overall share of CFP money, as the AAC did last year.

IIRC, the NY6 money is $6 million, so since there is usually a $2m spread among the G5 conferences as ranked (e.g., #1 gets $20m, #2 gets $18m, etc.) than a conference ranked as low as #4 could possibly get the most overall money, if they put the team in the NY6.

No question. The MW might turn out to be the 3rd or 4th best G5 this year. I just thought the MW was unusually good this first weekend (week 0 included).

I'm not sure any G5 conference has ever notched wins over four of the five P5 conferences in the first week.
